Valeria | Ylisse | 27 years old | Ylissean Grand Captain
Valeria was the daughter of a Ylissean guard and a merchant, and despite them being relatively poor, they were able to live happily. However, her mother eventually turned out to Plegian spy, and a Captain of the Guard showed up to arrest her. Instead, he was forced to kill her in self-defense. However, the captain, deciding that this wasn't "fun" enough, proceeded to accuse her father of being a traitor by actively helping the spy, in spite of how obviously shocked he was at the revelation.
Throw in a ridiculously one-sided trial, which reeked of bribery and corruption, and we have a very angry Valeria. She enlisted into the Ylissean guard once she was old enough, and, little by little, was able to gather enough evidence to not only prove her father's innocence, but finally bring the captain's corruption to light. After all of this was said and done, Valeria was offered his old position and, despite a rocky start, she is now widely respected among the Ylissean guards.
Friendship
Valeria is, for the most part, relatively friendly, though she's also a bit on the abrasive side, and can, for all intents and purposes, be a bit of a jerkass at times. Generally, she doesn't usually mean any harm, but she will often say whatever comes to mind, and with little regard to whether or not it might offend or upset someone. That said, while she may be a bit of a jerk, she's definitely of the "with a heart of gold" variety. She cares deeply for her friends and subordinates, and will always do what she can to help them if needed.
So, at first, she might seem a little hard to approach due to her crass nature. Once she warms up to someone, they'll see a softer side of her that she rarely shows to others. But even then, she's nowhere near as cruel or aloof as she might initially appear. She just has an awkward way of showing when she cares. Those who she considers to be her friends will rarely find themselves with a more loyal and dependable ally.
Enemies
It can be pretty easy to end up on this list. She's not fond of thieves or assassins, even if they happen to be allies, so it may take a while for them to gain her trust. How long generally depends on whose side they're on. Naturally, she tends to be a subject of hatred among a lot of bandits, especially since a large portion of her career has been built on ruining a lot of bandits' days with her axe. The ironic part is that there are a lot of people who say that she would make an excellent bandit herself. While that might be true, she would have her fingers chopped off one-by-one than betray Ylisse.
Another way to end up on her shit list is to display any signs of corruption within Ylisse. After all, she got her position by taking down a corrupt captain who (literally out of boredom) falsely accused her father of treason. Naturally, she's not going to turn a blind eye to anything like that, unless there's a very good reason for it. Like, millions of lives depending on it. Even then, she won't be happy about it, and she will not be afraid to let them know.If she ever finds out what Matthius is up to, it will be a very interesting day for both of them.
Making fun of/insulting her for her lack of education probably won't win you any points, either. Just because she can't read doesn't make her any less capable of kicking someone's ass.
Lovers
And now for the really fun part. When it comes to romance, Valeria is a bit of an awkward mess. She's never even so much as held hands with anyone, so she generally has no clue what to do should someone show any interest in her. At least, when they're female that is. She's into other females, so she has a bit of an easier time turning away potential male suitors. However, when another girl is involved, she basically turns into a giant tsundere. More often than not, she'll pretend she isn't interested, and will act as though she'd prefer to focus on her job. How obvious this facade is generally depends on how strongly they come onto her.
As for when she is attracted to someone, she's a little better at hiding her feelings. If someone pays close enough attention, they might pick up a few hints here and there, but it will generally be more difficult for them to notice. Either way, she'll be self-conscious about her lack of experience, despite secretly longing for companionship. As such, she likely end up being a very loving partner, albeit one who is rather awkward and lacking in self-confidence. She won't quite reach "paranoid stalker" levels, but she may end up being a tad clingy at times. As long as they don't mind this and are able to reassure her that she's not screwing things up, any potential partners should have little trouble winning her heart.
Fun Facts in General
- Despite her overall hatred of bandits, it's often joked about among the guards how much she looks like she would fit in easily with them when she dresses casually (for example, see above). And, while she doesn't necessary disagree with them, old habits die hard. It's what she's used to wearing, and she doesn't have a whole lot else in the way of clothing.
- Naturally, her illiteracy has presented its share of problems, though she has been trying to learn. That said, her duties as grand captain tend to keep her fairly busy most of the time, so it's rare that she finds the time to properly learn. If her schedule ever lightens up, she'll gladly devote more time to it, though.
- Current Reading Level: Can barely make it through childrens' picture books.
- Though she doesn't really look the type, she's a surprisingly good cook. Not enough to be considered a great chef, but many have been surprised that she's capable of not burning everything she tries to make and that it often doesn't taste half bad.
- Her favorite food is any kind of beef stew, while her favorite drink is pretty much anything with alcohol. That said, she avoids drinking on the job, and knows her limit well enough to avoid waking up with a massive hangover. Naturally, she still ends up in the occasional drunken brawl, though, to her defense, she almost never starts them. At least, not without good intentions.
- She'll eat them if there's nothing else available to snack on, but she's not fond of leeks or carrots. She also can't stand anything spicy, something that, given her overall image, some find to be a bit ironic.
