BIO
• Vaigali and his brother Layle were born on the wrong side of the tracks. In Valm, hesitation in battle could get you killed. And when Layle would hesitate... it would fall to Vaigali to protect them both. Their father was a man their mother couldn't remember - likely a conquered nobleman or a weary soldier from Rosanne. Their mother was a drunkard; she couldn't care less about either.
• In fact, by the time Vaigali was ten, the woman got up and walked away, leaving the elder the sole protector of his little brother, the light in his life. His little one. His angel. His one and only. His Layle. But Vaigali was only ten, Layle seven. He was no mother. He could barely parent himself. Maybe that was why, as a child, he first began to steal. It earned him cuffs and harsh words, taught him to grow up and fast.
• By fourteen, he'd been in and out of the local gaol so often that he knew each of the guards by name. By fifteen, he'd been given the brand of a thief. By sixteen, he'd been so used to what he did that he could escape the prison without thinking twice. By seventeen, he'd killed his first man, wanting nothing more than to protect Layle. It put bread on the table, he told himself. Layle never had to know.
• At eighteen, everything changed. The man was seized in the public market, and when a fifteen year old Layle turned to him... Vaigali did what he did best: he lied. He put a smile on his face and assured his little brother that everything would be okay. He promised that he'd come home. He lied as hard as he could, unable to stand the heartbreak in those eyes. It would be the last time he saw the boy.
• But Vaigali wasn't killed. Instead he was dragged to meet the regent, bound and chained, and given a choice. He could meet his end on the executioner's block, as befitting of a low-life like him, and his little brother would naturally be sold as a slave to cover his debts... or he could better himself, earn titles and lands and enough money to keep him and his brother from worry ever again. He could go to Ylisse, the land that had turned back, and he would put his ears to rumors. He would learn how the countries worked, what the people were like. He would learn who would be sympathetic to their cause... and who he would need to kill in preparation for an invasion.
• The man left immediately, on a ship bound far from home. He established his credentials, spent a year gaining a name for himself as a sellsword around Ylisse, Plegia, and Ferox. He gained the friendship of a pegasus, the legitimacy needed to craft his lies... and then he set his eyes on the Knights of Cydonia. Their message sounds too good to be true, a distraction from the people that he should be helping to push to destruction... so he's going to do his damndest to do his job. If not for himself... then for the face he's slowly beginning to forget...
OTHER
Vaigali's pegasus is a creature by the name of Bell. She's high-spirited, a bit of a show-off, and more often than not, she's at odds with Vaigali, usually requiring him to resort to smacking her with the end of his lance or being rather heavy-handed with the reins or with his legs - the result of him being a clumsy rider, unfamiliar with such things prior to taming Bell. In spite of this, however, Bell is fiercely loyal to him, unafraid to lash out for him with her hooves and coming to a whistle from him unless she is physically incapable of doing so.
