BIO
Valeria was born to a knight in the Ylissean guard and his wife, a merchant who was fairly skilled with a sword herself. Though they didn't have much money, they got by with what they did have, and they were able to live fairly happily. Unfortunately, they couldn't afford to put Valeria through school, but she still managed to make some friends in spite of this. For as long as anyone could remember, Valeria was a fairly mischievous child, but otherwise never got into much trouble, and was usually polite to her elders when she needed to be. Overall, her childhood wasn't exactly easy, but at the same time, she had no complaints.
Valeria's happy life came crashing to a halt when she was 11. The at-the-time captain of the guard showed up at their home with three other knights, demanding to see her mother. As it soon turned out, she was a Plegian spy, and had been leaking sensitive information about Ylisse to Plegia for years. To this day, neither Valeria nor her father could tell you what shocked them more; the accusations brought forth by the captain, or that she didn't even bother denying them. Brandishing a hidden sword, the woman attacked the guards, and Valeria was forced to watch in horror as her mother was brutally struck down in self-defense.
However, it didn't end there. The captain, who was clearly on a power trip at the time, immediately set his sights on her father. Despite the fact that he was clearly shocked by the revelation, the captain (much to the confusion of his subordinates) proceeded to falsely accuse him of also being a spy, and had him arrested on the spot. Not wanting to meet the same fate as his wife, he surrendered peacefully once it became clear that his pleas of innocence were falling on deaf ears. Valeria loudly protested this, and was met with a swift kick to the chest from the captain, along with a promise that he would not hesitate to kill even a child if they got in his way. With this, Valeria's family was all but destroyed, and the girl was on her own.
Her father's trial was insultingly one-sided. The captain piled numerous lies onto the charges against him, and despite how obvious a lot of them were, no one could do anything about it; there simply wasn't enough evidence to prove the blatant misuse of power that was happening before everyone's eyes. The only saving grace was that there was just enough evidence to prevent his execution. But even then, he was doomed to spend the rest of his life locked away in a dungeon, branded as a traitor to Ylisse. Never in her life had Valeria ever felt so helpless.
When she was old enough, she took the first chance she got to enlist into the Ylissean guard. Although she was allowed to join, she was met with contempt and treated harshly. After all, she was the "daughter of a spy and a traitor". However, that was her sole reason for joining. Even if it took her entire life, she would fine the evidence she needed to not only exonerate her father, but see that the corrupt captain who ruined her family would be brought to justice. Naturally, this would prove to be far easier said than done, as any attempts she made to gather information were effectively stonewalled. It became more apparent to her than ever that she had a long way to go.
Over the years, she continued to train, slowly but steadily rising through rank. Along the way, she met allies; people who were just as sick of the captain as she was, but were, regardless of their power and/or authority, unable to do anything about him. Little by little, she was able to rack up favors and, eventually all of it paid off. She was able to obtain evidence of the captain's corruption, and even found the perfect time and place to present it to the higher ups so that they would have no choice but to take action. As it turned out, her father was far from the only one he had wrongfully accused, and his sole reason for doing so was simply "because he could".
Regardless, the opportunity to expose his corruption finally came, and it couldn't have gone better. The captain was immediately stripped of his rank and arrested, and Valeria's father (along with many others who had been put through the same experience) were fully pardoned and released. After the fact, and in light of all of her effort over the years, Valeria was unanimously elected to take the captain's place. She was genuinely shocked at this news, but, with urging from her father, she accepted the position. She was only 21 at the time, which made her one of the youngest captains in Ylissean history. But she was confident she was up for the task.
It was a bumpy road at first. There were many who, for one reason or another, didn't feel she was fit for the position and would often go out of their way to interfere with her work. Eventually, she was given the chance to prove herself. A large number of Plegian bandits had organized themselves and caught the city off guard with an attack. But this proved to be Valeria's time to shine. Almost single-handedly, she defended the border of the city from the bandits. Even while exhausted and heavily injured, she refused to let a single bandit through. This, in turn, inspired the other guards to rally behind her, and eventually turn the tides of the battle. Despite the odds, the bandits were pushed back.
It was in this battle that she finally earned the respect of the other guards, and the few that still opposed her were quickly driven out. After that, things went a lot smoother for her. It took her a while to establish the right balance between strictness and lenience, but once she did, she proved herself to be more than qualified for the responsibilities brought on by her job. Naturally, her father, who retired shortly after his release from the dungeon, was extremely proud of his daughter, and looked forward to seeing what she would accomplish.
OTHER
Valeria is fairly well-known among the knights for being strict but fair. She has little tolerance for laziness, and she can be a bit of a slave-driver when she's in a particularly bad mood. That said, she knows when to let minor offenses slide and, despite her overall blunt attitude, she is always willing to give pointers to those struggling in their training. When she needs to, however, she can and will crack down on them. That said, she cares greatly for those under her command, and, while she doesn't always show it, would go to hell and back for them.
Much to her chagrin, Valeria's upbringing left her little time for a proper education, so her academic abilities are rather poor. She more than makes up for it with her street smarts and prowess in combat and training, but there are times when it can be especially noticeable. The biggest example is that she greatly struggles with reading, almost to the point that it borders on illiteracy. She does a bit better with math, but anything beyond basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division generally goes above her head.
Last but not least, Valeria is a lesbian, and, while she never makes any attempts to hide it, she doesn't exactly go out and broadcast it to the world either. If one pays close enough attention, they will be able to pick up some hints here and there. Otherwise, she's doesn't really say or do much to indicate her preference one way or the other. Either way, she's a bit awkward when it comes to romance, due to her lack of "experience". She'll often pretend not to be interested and use the excuse that she simply doesn't want it getting in the way of her job, but it's rather easy to see though this facade. More often than not, she's just worried about screwing up somehow.
