The mountain ranges of southern Ferox were treacherous to pass on one's own, many a traveler would warn any seeking passage to travel in groups and be wary for bandits weren't the only danger that lined the mountain path. As it had stood an hour ago, the young lord had been nearing the southern border of Regna Ferox, making his way slowly back to Ylisse over such a path. He had completed what training he had set out to do on his own and was nearing the date of his expected return. Even as a creature raised in comfort, he had been taught by his teacher that people could only find their true potential when all contact with the world had been shut out. Living by his own volition, he had survived a month on his own with limited human contact. It wasn't very often he was able to do this, and when he was he was often warned against it by his mother. He could only imagine the worry he caused her... The young lord shook his head, looking out over the western skies where dark clouds were forming. A storm was coming, but it looked to be a long way off. The thought was one he was soon to regret.
It seemed to Eric that the sun had started setting early, or maybe time had progressed faster than he'd thought? Both were wrong as the first signs of snow landed on his head. Within minutes the wind had picked up and the light snowfall and turned into a flurry blinding the young lordling in a blanket of white. Beware the mountain paths, for it is here that nature swallows man and animal alike. Eric felt the chill of the fridged air slap against his face stealing the warmth from him though he was dressed in heavy fur clothes designed for these conditions. His cloak was wrapped around him to retain as much heat as he could as he trudged through the soft, newly fallen snow that slipped from under his feet. More than once he was brought to his knees stumbling blindly through the white. He stopped suddenly, his indigo eyes seeing something.
"Hello?" He yelled cautiously, making his way toward the figure.

[googlefont="Sacramento"] 'And we separate; nothing is the same forever. I see you drive away; wish I could make you stay.' Emeline had traveled for several days on the back of her wyvern Fenrir, finally arriving at the border of Regna Ferox. The area was much colder than she had anticipated, yet she came prepared with heavy layers of clothing clinging to her frame. Before arriving here, the young minstrel got separated from her friend Cecily, who had traveled with her from their home continent of Valm. Having reached land after days of being airborne, Emeline was worried that her friend may have gotten lost due to her curiosity. Yet to be frank, Emeline knew nothing of this unknown continent, and found herself lost among the cold region. The poor girl was exhausted, and she had no doubt that her wyvern felt the same. He had been flying without a moment's rest, and it surprised her that Fenrir had so much stamina.
However, just as Emeline was about to prepare a campsite, that was when the blizzard kicked in. A cry of surprise left her lips as the wind blew harshly and her body heat began to drop dramatically. Fenrir had wrapped his massive wings around her to shield his human from the cold, but the biting wind managed to get to her and add to her exhausted state. She clung to her dragon for dear life, yet she could her consciousness slipping away from her as she slowly slid down to her knees. Someone's voice snapped her back into reality, and Emeline narrowed her eyes to see a figure headed her way. Without as much as a thought of the stranger being an enemy, she called out to him, voice desperate and pleading.
"Over here!!"

He approached the massive figure that was huddled on the ground. The scaly form taking shape as he neared the creature. He identified it immediately as a wyvern. The proud beast lay on the snow, still as could be-- more snow had already started blanketing on top of it. If it wasn't for the wings shifting slightly he probably would have mistaken it for dead. Not that he would have been surprised by that fact, but rather by whatever reason it was up north to begin with. As a cold blooded creature it thrived in much warmer climates. He extended a hand and touched the creature's side. Perhaps it was tamed, perhaps it simply didn't have the energy to retaliate. Whichever was the case it didn't retreat from his touch.
"What are you doing way out here?" He whispered to it. His eyes were drawn to the thing on its back. A saddle. Had its rider left it here? That didn't seem very likely. Eric moved around to the wings and moved one aside exposing the head, but more importantly the rider that was hidden beneath. "By the gods!" He swore, dropping to his knees next to the girl's form. He removed a glove and felt the girl's face. She was as cold as the snow she was laying on and rightfully so, the dress she wore looked like it was made from silk save for the fur that lined its hem. It was slightly insulated, but not to the degree that would keep her anywhere warm enough. Eric had to act fast, he removed his fur cloak and wrapped it snugly around the girl. He picked her up, slinging her over a shoulder. He looked to the Wyvern and put his ungloved hand on its nose. If it was going to make it, it would have to move on its own. Though Eric was fit, there wasn't any way a human could ever carry a Wyvern. Without a word, Eric started off again, moving toward the mountain's face.
Whether he'd expended a lifetime supply of luck or if the gods had decided it wasn't their time to meet their makers, he found himself standing before a cave. Without a second thought as to what may already be occupying it he went inside, the Wyvern following using the last of its strength to make it. It collapsed to the ground breathing heavily. Carefully, he lay the girl next to it. That was well and good-- they had found shelter, but now they had the problem of warmth. Thankfully there were leaves and twigs scattered about the floor, even a few logs he managed to find as he searched further into the cave. It seemed someone else had been here perhaps even recently but perhaps hadn't made it back before the blizzard struck. Whatever the case, this was exactly what they needed. Putting his wilderness survival skills to the test, Eric managed to put together a make-shift fire, getting a blaze going. Eric moved back tot he girl and picked her back up, carrying her over to the fire's warmth, sitting himself down next to it, holding her close to share his body heat. The wyvern seemed to sense the warmth and picked itself up, moving closer to the fire and curling itself up into a ball as close to it as it could.

[googlefont="Sacramento"] 'And we separate; nothing is the same forever. I see you drive away; wish I could make you stay.' Emeline had lost consciousness by the time the male figure approached them, her breathing slow and heavy. She felt a hand on her face and winced slightly, trying to regain her senses once more before she completely lost herself to the bitter cold. She couldn't die here, she thought in the back of her mind. Not now, not after she had come this far. The minstrel soon felt herself being lifted from the ground, a small groan leaving her lips as she winced once more, slowly coming back into reality. Someone was carrying her, she realized. But who...? After a while, she felt warmth coming back to her body, shivering against the male who had held her close to him. Fluttering her eyes open, the first thing Emeline saw was a small fire, providing as much warmth as it could. Fenrir had huddled closer to the small flame, already warming up with a deep sigh which made his human smile in relief. It took a short while to realize that she was being held by the unknown male, a dark blush painting her cheeks as she slowly turned her head to see the one who had saved her and her Wyvern.
Without as much as a second thought, the girl let out a small yelp and quickly removed herself from his arms, leaning against her dragon with wide eyes and a beet red face. Fenrir seemed to sense her embarrassment and nudged his snout against her cheek affectionately, making Emeline smile ever so slightly before turning to the male with soft eyes.
"Um... T-Thank you... For saving Fenrir and I..." She spoke in a timid manner, a shy smile creasing the girl's lips.

The young woman shivered in his arms providing evidence that she was still alive. A sense of relief flooded over Eric and he relaxed a bit. He didn't know how long they'd sat there, the howling of the wind outside filling the silence and blurred the minutes together. He'd noticed her eyelashes move before registering she was awake. How long had she been up? He craned his head to get a better look at her just as she turned to look at him. Her face was a deep shade of red and bolted away from him with a yell leaving him sitting stunned by her response. Was she scared of him? He hadn't thought himself to be a scary person. Perhaps he'd misjudged himself in some way.
The girl seemed to calm down at her wyvern's comforting nudge and spoke a thanks to him. Eric didn't respond to her and crawled toward her, taking a knee in front of her and put a hand to her forehead. She was burning up. Her response was good for having been so out of it just moments before, but he couldn't be sure she would remain fine after such a close call. "You shouldn't move around so much. After such a close call it's best to not take any chances." He stood up and moved toward the fire, putting on another log. The flame flared as it hungrily reached for its sustenance. She needed to rest, but at the same time he couldn't have her falling asleep. "My name is Eric. What were you doing out in such terrible weather? Doesn't seem like very good conditions." He looked over to her. Though she was still wrapped up in his fur cape he could at least see her face. She looked on the young side, maybe his age-- perhaps a little older. This, perhaps, confused him even more-- what on earth was she doing out in the middle of a blizzard alone?

[googlefont="Sacramento"] 'And we separate; nothing is the same forever. I see you drive away; wish I could make you stay.' The dark haired female blushed even more at the awkward silence as the man crawled over and placed a hand on her forehead. Her eyes widened and her heart pounded against her chest at the sudden contact, biting her lip lightly before releasing a breath she had been holding without realizing it once he removed his hand. As he spoke, Emeline gave him a small nod, placing her hand her forehead to find that she was already forming a fever. She could still feel the tingling sensation of the man's touch on her skin, and it made her even more embarrassed. Shaking her head to herself, she looked up as the man introduced himself, tilting her head to the side with a smile.
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Eric. I'm Emeline..." She spoke, then blinked a few times as he asked her what she was doing all the way out here. Looking down, her smile faded into an expression of sadness and worry, causing her Wyvern to rest his large head lightly on her lap.
"I'm looking for my best friend, Cecily..." She started, meeting his gaze head on now. "You see, both Cecily and I are from Valm, and we got separated on the way here. I don't know if she's all right, and I thought she might have ended up here. Though, to be honest with you..." She paused, looking down once more. "I'm afraid I know very little about these lands... I don't even know where I am right now..." She admitted, feeling ashamed for her lack of knowledge.

I design not in word or talk but in deed and truth
The girl, Emeline she was named, was certainly a little peculiar. She was in a place she didn't know looking for a friend who might or might not have come this way and ended up getting caught in the middle of a blizzard that nearly killed her. She was strong to have recovered so fast and he couldn't help but be impressed that she'd managed to hang on. "Well, Emeline," He spoke her name, testing it as he walked back toward her and took a seat next to the girl. It was a good name and the more he associated it with her, the more it seemed to fit. "you are a very lucky person. Right now you're in a mountain range that acts as the border between Regna Ferox and Ylisse. Ylisse, to the south, is where I'm from." He tilted his head, his hair shifting about his shoulders. So, she was a foreigner? Not the first he'd run into, immigrants from Valm were actually more common than one might think since the war against the Conqueror ended. However, if she was unfamiliar with where she was it stood to reason she'd recently arrived from Valm. Her friend, Cicily, must have also come with her-- it stood to reason that somehow they'd gotten separated some short time ago.
The more he thought about it, the more impulsive the girl seemed, but he could understand where she was coming from in trying to reunite with the one thing familiar she'd come to this strange place with. He felt a little concerned, it was possible that if he just let her go on her own again she'd just get herself into another life threatening situation. What a dilemma... There was one thing for certain as things stood right now, she was in no condition to go anywhere on her own. "I'm afraid you were the only one I found in the storm." His eyebrows came together a bit as he tried to remember in vain if there had been any sign of another person. No, there hadn't been, he was sure of it. "I'm sure your friend is safe. It's just intuition, but I'm hardly ever wrong when it comes to these kinds of things." He put a hand on her head and gave her a reassuring smile.

Emeline lifted her head as Eric spoke her name, watching him take a seat beside her with soft eyes. Fenrir watched with a friendly growl, nudging his large snout against the palm of the girl's hand as she gently pet his head. As she heard him to reveal her location, her eyes widened ever so slightly. The border between Ylisse and Regna Ferox...? Looking down at her lap for a brief moment, Emeline bit her lip and clutched at her skirt lightly as realization clicked in her mind. She was a long way from home, and now she had no way of getting back to Valm. True, she could have her Wyvern fly back, but she couldn't risk getting her companion injured or worse on the way there. That, and the threat of Grima was in these lands. The sound of Eric's voice snapped her back into reality, blushing deeply as his hand rested on the top of her head. She felt a sense of comfort in his words, and it made Emeline smile in return.
"I hope you're right..." She giggled softly, turning her gaze to the outside of the cave to see that the blizzard was still continuing. Without thinking, a small yawn left the girl's lips and she leaned against her dragon's side, causing Fenrir to rub his snout against her cheek affectionately. She was tired, she thought. Having nearly been frozen to death, she needed to rest.

Eric couldn't help himself but to smile at her small laugh. It made him happy that she was feeling well enough to be able to enjoy herself no matter how dire her circumstances had been but moments before. The wyvern sounded less than pleased with him sitting so close to it, but it hadn't made any movement to bite his head off yet, so Eric supposed that was a blessing. The way Emeline showed her affection so easily to Fenrir, Eric assumed the two of them must have been close. He let out a breath as he stood, noticing her yawn. He couldn't help but think she was a little cute.
"You must be tired after all that's happened. Feel free to sleep through the storm, I'll stay and watch to make sure nothing happens." He offered, stretching before walking toward the mouth of the cave. He was already warmed by the fire and the girl didn't seem to be in any more danger. All they could do now was wait for the storm to pass. Given how suddenly it appeared, the young lord wasn't sure how long that would be exactly. "If there's anything I can get for you, just say so." He gave her another quick look before sitting himself down, gazing out at the flurry of snow, his face falling a bit as he watched the swirling image change before his eyes. He didn't know how long he'd been watching, but he got up every once in a while to add a log to the fire. He glanced over to Emeline only for his eyes to stop on her. She was asleep and looked completely peaceful. It was different from when he'd found her-- a tranquility hung over her.
His eyes shifted a little to the Wyvern who was staring at him with what seemed to be daggers. Eric raised an eyebrow, "What, I'm just looking." He explained to the creature. It didn't seem to buy it and continued glaring at the young lord. "It's true!" Eric kept his voice down to a whisper trying to persuade Fenrir. Wait, what was he doing, talking to an animal to begin with? It wasn't like it understood what he was saying-- did it..? Eric let out a sigh as he raised his hands defensively in the air. "Alright, alright. I entrust her to your care." He conceded, taking a look back outside. The storm seemed to have calmed down a bit-- now that he thought about it, she'd probably be hungry when she woke up. He could definitely use something to eat himself. He gave Emeline another quick look before moving swiftly from the cave, snow still falling but much calmer than before.
Fifteen minutes. That was all it took for Eric to come back with three rabbits in a hand. Everything was the same as he'd left it-- minus Fenrir having snuggled up next to Emeline himself to take a quick snooze. "So much for keeping a diligent eye on things while I was gone." Eric narrowed his eyes at the wyvern who seemed blissfully unaware. And so began the task of preparing the food, skinning the rabbits and preparing a spit where he could properly cook the meat. The preparations took a bit but at last he started cooking the meat. While not ideal cooking conditions, it was the best he had and he made due. It wouldn't be long before the waft of prepared food would fill the cave.
