KINGS AND QUEENS OF PROMISE | Lilou was home for the holidays, and she supposed it was too much to hope for a little bit of peace and quiet.
She didn't normally visit the stables in the middle of the night, but when Lilou did, she tended to notice if all the horses had gone missing. She was pretty sure the regular stable boys would've noticed too, because it wasn't the sort of thing that went unnoticed--especially when the stables were also on fire.
Some of the horses were milling about, others running in any direction that wasn't ablaze, but Lilou saw the most of them heading northwards out of the village, herded by a group of thieves and barbarians.
Bandits? In Clarent? They were either new around here, or they were very, very brave. Or both.
With a storm cloud over her head, Lilou took a head count of the remaining horses while yelling for one of the guardsmen to fetch Aurelia. She could calm down the spooked horses on her own, but she wasn't about to run after an entire group of bandits without someone at her side. "Find her, and tell her we're riding out!"
The villagers could handle the fire, although it seemed like they'd need new to build a new stable regardless. Lilou sought out the remaining horses, attacking them with kind words and carrots until she had a pair that looked ready for a midnight jaunt. All she needed now was Aurelia.

some coincidences are deliberate The green-haired knight wasn't having the best of luck sleeping where she had been. She figured it was because she'd left her window open and with the nights growing colder... She finally relented, opening her eyes and stepping to the window, intending to take a breath of fresh night air and then close up. Yes the smokey scent was quite nic--wait just a second. Aurelia squinted against the darkness, but could clearly make out a building where the stables should be that was uncharacteristically on fire - especially for the stables.
As such, she was putting on her armor on right over her nightdress when Lilou's messenger burst into the room, and then immediately turned around. She shrugged, poor guy and his sense of modesty, it wasn't like it was revealing anything. Regardless, now armored (a little oddly, but still armored), she strode up to her liege with her sword firmly on her belt, and reached for the reins of one of the horses. Hauberk was the old fella's name if she remembered right. Old, but trusty, just like any number of things she could make comparisons too - often with a degree of humor added.
"Decided to make the stables a little warmer this time of year m'lady? Don't blame ya, the stables were terribly drafty." The distance from her room to the stables was enough that the knaves were out of her sight, but she trusted that Lilou had followed their trail with her eyes as best she was able. KINGS AND QUEENS OF PROMISE | The remains of the stable were blackened and smelled like a barbecue gone horribly wrong. The ash carried through the air in the most unpleasant way, and Lilou was all too happy to see Aurelia. The sooner they rode out, the sooner they could find justice.
Still, she smiled, a bit grim but it was there, because she could always count on the other knight for a decent jape at any hour of the day, it seemed. "Aye, I keep myself warm in the blazing ruins of my villages, for there exists no finer kindling. The Exalt shall have me beheaded for abusing the innocent any day now--long may he reign." Too soon? Too soon.
Lilou mounted the horse, who hardly waited for her to get situated in the saddle before starting off in a cheerful trot. At least one of them was happy to be riding out at this midnight hour, she supposed. Lilou gave her reins only the lightest of tugs to turn the horse north rather than east.
"They went north with most of the horses in the stables." They couldn't be moving fast while herding a dozen horses, at least not faster than proper horsemen could ride. They could catch up soon--or so she hoped. "Do you remember the land around the village? I'm not sure where they could be heading or where they'd keep camp."

some coincidences are deliberate Well, if Lilou might burn for her remarks about the until recently reigning Exalth (too soon indeed, but Aurelia didn't mind), the green-haired knight would be right behind her for chuckling at it and finding it generally amusing. Lilou usually didn't 'have' a sense of humor, at least not a tactful one for the most part and that was what Aurelia liked best about it. No harm intended by it, just poking fun at the things that were a bit touchier than some people would be willing to touch.
"It better be fine kindling, I don't think your mother would settle for less," Aurelia quipped back before she hauled herself into the saddle. Checking to make sure everything was properly cinched, she urged the horse after Lilou and her own mount. The land to the north huh? "Hmm, only thing I can think of that'd be up that way would be the valley river. That'll lead out of the duchy's grasp. I could always snag the court cartographer, I'm sure he'd be pleased to be dragged around as a map at this hour." Again sassy, but that was just the way Aurelia was, and there was no changing it.
More seriously she returned to the topic of the possible routes for the unlucky thieves. "Their probably aiming for the woods at the end of the valley. It's pretty thick, so it can be easy to lose someone in there, and at this time of night..." She didn't need to finish the statement. Under the dark canopy in the middle of night they would never have a faint chance at picking up the brigands' trail in those conditions, even if she was familiar with the forest from spending plenty of times napping there when she was younger.
