[attr="class","ban01"] [attr="class","ban02"] THIS IS WAR "Hmmmm, the 'Hero of Shadows'… Just who was he or she and why were they stricken out of history?" Gairovald said to himself. He was looking up various cooking recipes in the Ylissean library before noticing a historical archive of the War of Heroes. Out of curiosity, Gairovald flipped through the contents and came across a strange reference, someone known as the "Hero of Shadows." He had heard and read much about the War of Heroes, but never had he heard about the Hero of Shadows. There doesn't seem to be anything more about him in this book. At least none that I can find. Perhaps there is something about him in some historical documents on Altea. However, Gairovald's search came to no avail. Whoever, this person was, they were practically erased from history. Left to be forgotten in the shadows of history. Just why would a 'Hero' be erased from history? Did they offend someone? Was there a need? If I remembered correctly, both Altea and Akaneia were basically in utter ruin. Assuming his deeds fitted the title of 'Hero', erasing his name would have made it easier for the Hero King Marth to unite the two nations. Did the Hero King order his name to be stricken from History? That doesn't seem right... It was a logical strategy but it doesn't feel like something a 'Hero King' would do. Hmmm, I am at a bit of a dead end here aren't I?

"Another one..." Nascha sighed, returning a book she'd picked out to its shelf. She'd gotten excited when she heard about a public access library, an incredible rarity even in these days. But so far she was unimpressed with what she'd found. Old stories of great heroes were well and good, but so many of them cast a dragon as the villain. Just because her grandfather had enslaved humanity and had to be struck down by a human hero...three times...didn't mean that all dragons were inherently like them. No commentary was necessary on the Fell Dragon, especially when the latest book was written before his resurrection.

"Humans sure are set in their ways," she said to no one in particular. This was why she didn't like being too open about who she was. A manakete? Sure, there had been enough of the good ones (recently, even) to change some people's perceptions. An earth dragon? That was just asking for trouble.

She wandered down along a few rows, idly looking at titles as she passed. Nothing stood out to her, at least not until she came across someone else, poring over a section of slightly more personal (or at least familial) relation to her than what she'd seen so far. "The War of Heroes, huh?" she thought out loud, approaching the man and the bookshelf. "There's a story I haven't heard in a long time."

Only, it seems like there may be some parts that were lost," Gairovald replied to the woman. "This is just too strange. References exist, but that's it, just references… Hey have you ever heard of the 'Hero of Shadows?' There are a few references to this person, but that's it. Nothing else. Historians tend to be rather crafty. Whenever an order for an alteration is issued, the real history is usually just hidden somewhere, never truly erased. However, this is an almost complete erasure. Just a few scarce references exist. None of the references seem to infer anything negative about this 'Hero" either." Just who was this person and why were they erased? "Does he or she have something to do with the Altean Knights? The knights seem to be close whenever this 'Hero of Shadow' is mentioned. Still why was this person erased and who orchestrated it?" Gairovald's attention was completely focused on his research, completely ignoring any and all formalities, disregarding to even introduce himself.

'Hero of Shadows'? The term rang a bell, but only in the vaguest sense. Nascha had to admit, most of her own knowledge of that time came from books as well. Her father had stayed hidden through the whole of the War of Heroes to avoid attracting the attention of someone like the Dark Pontifex, so most of his stories of the time were from similar sources and hearsay. They were at least closer to the time period in question, but even then Nascha knew very little about the man's topic of choice beyond what he'd already said.

"I've heard of the epithet, but I can't say I know much either. I believe the person had to be one of the Altean Knights, or maybe even a royal guard. But other than that...someone who played an important role in the war but, as you said, was lost to history." This man was so absorbed in his line of inquiry that he just started speaking his thoughts and asking questions without introducing himself, but that was fine. It was a topic that, if they got too in-depth, Nascha's age and possibly her heritage would start showing. In that case, maybe it would be better to just be someone who came and went.

If not, she would probably just excuse herself before that point.

"As for your question...if the 'Hero of Shadows' epithet is any indication, maybe it was their own choice to not be remembered?"

[attr="class","ban01"] [attr="class","ban02"] THIS IS WAR “Do you know of any books that may give more information?” Gairovald asked. “While it is very possible that they stricken their own name out of history, so that the people would look towards the Hero King and only the Hero King, allowing him to more easily unite the two nations together. But if that was the case, then the Hero of Shadows must have had near blinding loyalty to the Hero King. To have that much faith in someone, I find it somewhat difficult to imagine. Though I guess sometimes, the unbelievable is truly is what happened. Though, if that truly was the case, then I can’t help but imagine the disappointment they would have if they saw the current state of the world they fought for.” Shortly afterwards, Gairovald realized he didn’t introduce himself yet. “Ah, my apologies, I forgot to introduce myself. The name’s Gairovald; mind if I ask for yours?”

Nascha shook her head. "You could check other, older libraries, but I doubt they'll have any more information. If any books like that are still around, they'd probably be in the private libraries of noble houses from over a thousand years ago." She wasn't trying to show off her age, far from it. That said, if she kept along this line of conversation too long, it would probably start to show through anyway. All of her sources were old. Some were more than a thousand years old. Sooner or later it would become clear that she was either part of such a noble house or just that old as well.

"It's just a theory, anyway. That kind of loyalty is rare, but not unheard of. It certainly exists today, although I wouldn't say it's quite as noble. And if there is anybody in all of history who could command that kind of loyalty, I wouldn't be surprised if Hero-King Marth was one of them." Nascha chose to ignore the young man's comment about the current state of the world. So much had changed since Nascha had been born that she could hardly claim it was even the same world were it not for the fact that she lived through all of it. She did at least wonder how she would react to the modern world if she'd hibernated through most of the last thousand years, like so many of her kind.

She bowed her head slightly when the man gave his name and asked hers. "It's Nascha," she answered.

Taking into account the passage of time, the still common illiteracy, conflicts, and likely mistreatment of literature, it would not surprise me if the records I seek are in the hands of the nobility.” Gairovald replied with a heavy sigh, disappointed that his research had come to a screeching halt. “It is a shame that not too many people see the value in literature. They can be seen as a speaking with both the past and future. By reading we are basically listening to the past and by writing we are speaking to the future. If only people understood this; instead we have a petty battle over the throne of a decrepit kingdom.” It was quite clear and apparent that Gairovald detested the current situation, finding Ylisse to be a shadow of its former self. “By the way, you didn’t answer my question about the heroes of the past seeing the future they fought for,” Gairovald added, not one to forget about unanswered or avoided questions.
