Wearing simple black leather armor with a black cloak covering most of his body and his sword tied to his belt, Gairovald walked towards his client's home. After a couple years of solo mercenary work, Gairovald decided to do something different for a change of pace. A noble wanted a bodyguard and Gairovald, out of some strange instinct, immediately applied. Am I even qualified to protect someone? In terms of fighting ability, Gairovold was undoubtedly qualified. However, his past is filled with loss. Loved ones he failed to save. All giving him hesitations. Eh, it should be fine. It is most likely just some sheltered noble girl. She shouldn't be doing anything too dangerous. The most I should have to worry about is probably just thugs for when she goes to a city and maybe the odd assassin. I'm sure her home has plenty of guards posted as well so it shouldn't be too difficult of a job. Pays well too so I can’t really complain. There shouldn't be anything like those times… As the manor came into view, Gairovald could not help but whistle in amazement. Well someone certainly is rich. Well I guess you have to be rich to hire a bodyguard in the first place. As he approached the gate, a guard yelled, "Halt! State your name and business!" "Gairovald, I'm Lady Isolde's new bodyguard," Gairovald replied, taking out a letter bearing a seal. The guard looked at the letter and looked at Gairovald with a puzzling eye. At first glance Gairovald doesn't seem so opposing. He had a rather light build, not really the type to initially strike fear. Though a glance into his eyes made the guard break into a cold sweat for some strange reason. There was something about Gairovald's glare that intimidated people; something about his eyes that just yelled out hellish experience. Regaining his composure, the guard replied, "Very well, proceed straight to the front door," before handing back Gairovald the letter and opening the gate. "Thank you." Taking back the letter, Gairovald walked towards the front door and knocked.

[Isolde]

Another average day in the life of a Pegasus Knight, but also one of a noble lineage. After that meeting with a foreign woman and a future duke, she actually made a few friends in the first time in years. Not to mention that her family had hired a bodyguard for her which was an understatement. Surely, every rich person had to hire someone to protect them just in case if they face an assassin. Walking down the stairs inside the manor, she could hear someone knocking on the door. It was possible that her family had been dining which they couldn't really hear it unless they were done eating. Approaching the door, she couldn't help but wonder if her family had actually made a good choice in picking out someone to be her sworn protector. She was quite sheltered, but socialized with other people when needed to. Gingerly opening the front door, there stood a tall young man with hair as white as snow.

He was wearing leather armor and had a look that made people scared out of their minds. Well, not her though. For some reason, she seemed to be relaxed around his presence. She spoke with a gentle tone. "Hello. Are you the bodyguard my family has hired?"

[attr="class","ban01"] [attr="class","ban02"] THIS IS WAR "Yes, my name is Gairovald, I was a mercenary for eight years with the first six years spent in a group and the last two solo," Gairovald replied, handing Isolde his letter of acceptance. She does seem rather sheltered. Still, I get the strange feeling she is more capable in a fight than I should believe… Perhaps I should ask? Would it be rude to ask? It would be useful to know how capable she is. It would allow me to formulate plans and strategies with higher accuracy. "Judging from your relative age, would I be wrong to presume that you are Lady Isolde? And if you are Lady Isolde, may I ask how much combat experience do you have?" A noble's education is quite expansive and generally does include some form of martial arts, whether basic swordplay or something else. Still, those teachings are generally rather orthodox and don't exactly give them much experience dealing with those that would seek their life. It is probably a good idea to learn just how capable she is and perhaps see how well she can handle some more unorthodox styles. As Gairovald contemplates on how useful his client would be in a scrap, he is unintentionally staring at her, sizing her up and ignoring how rude he may seem.

And oh my. It seemed that the young man seemed to...stare at her as if his gaze pored into her very soul. Taking the letter of acceptance from him, he asked her if she had any combat experience at all. "I don't really have any real combat experience aside from training with training dummies. I hadn't been on the battlefield before." If she did go into the battlefield, it probably would've been dangerous since there might be the zombies that the people had been talking about and whatnot. His stare seemed to make her even more uncomfortable and it was probably rude too. Besides, staring at people was probably a scare tactic for someone in his getup as a former mercenary. "You shouldn't stare so much, Sir Gairovald. It's quite rude and uncomfortable..." It must've been awkward being stared at, but she did try to relax while she talked with him.

"I was merely playing out various scenarios in my head—trying to figure out opportune plans for various situations. Also, please don't call me Sir; I am not gallant knight or hero, only a common man who happens to be your bodyguard, so the title of Sir is not too fitting of me." So she only has experiences with training dummies? Well that is better than nothing I guess. Still some more practical experience could go a long ways. Though I can't really ask her to spar with me out of the blue can I? Well, one step at a time. Knowing her preferred weapon would make a good start. "As you can see I am a swordsman, but what weapon, if I may ask Lady Isolde, do you prefer to wield?" Gairovald asked, as he raised his cloak on the right side, revealing the sword tied to his belt.

Huh, not anyone wanted to be called that way as if a knight was called. Oh well, he would have to be called like any normal person would. But, his name seemed to be a medieval sort of name. He did apologize for his rather uncomfortable stare in which he explained that he was thinking of strategies to implement. The young man told her that he wielded a sword and thus, he was a swordsman. She hadn't met anyone who used a sword and publicly hung a sword around his belt like nobody's business. ""I wield a lance as my weapon. I did used to wield a wooden spear while training, but its durability has long since worn out." For some bizarre reason, she did feel some sort of comfort talking about it to him. Perhaps, his presence was more than enough to instigate some kindness and she wondered what was he thinking about while he stared at her though.

Obviously it would be done with practice weapons and we will still have to be careful to avoid injuries. It may seem counterproductive, but it would give me an idea of your skill level and give you some practical experience. It is very likely that there will be times where I am either incapacitated or separated from you so some experiences from sparring matches can go a long way. Forgive me if it was not my place to ask such a request." A bit of strain on Gairovald's face could be seen as he kept his manners in check; he never really was good at hiding discomfort. Ugh, I never really did like talking with nobles; this level of politeness just feels awkward. Have to keep an eye on my manners and way of speech. Anyway, hopefully we can get a sparring match going. Knowing her overall skill level would be invaluable. Plus it would be a good chance to give her some much needed practical knowledge. Though I am somewhat worried that this may be too strange of a request.

"Of course you may. It doesn't seem that strange of a request, but I'll be more than happy to spar with you. Perhaps a wooden sword could befit your training standards since a regular sword would produce injuries." Certainly, it would give her some experience of using a lance to pierce through an enemy and she would have to study a bit more on using a lance properly. What was immediately concerning was how strained the young man's face was. Sure, it was quite difficult to talk politely as it was probably hurting one's tongue, but it was the proper way of addressing a noble. "Are you alright, Gairovald? Your face greatly concerns me." It was worrying to see how tongue-tied the man was in his speech pattern. Maybe he might need a drink of water to calm him down a notch. Either way, training with a bodyguard and someone with a former job as a mercenary might come in handy for future battles.

My apologies if I concerned you milady," Gairovald replied. It's just the proper way; it's just the proper way. At the sparing site, Gairovald took note of wooden sword, swinging it a few times to get a feel for it. Each slash used a minimal amount of preparatory movement to make each swing more difficult to read and stopped in a defendable position as to avoid leaving openings. It was merely the basics yet vital none-the-less. Light… perhaps a bit too light. Well it will do. Isolde uses a lance so she will have the advantage in range, but that advantage becomes a disadvantage at close ranges due to lance focusing at the tip. I should switch to a reverse grip as I close in, it should be easier to use at the optimum range and will be easier to defend with. "Tell me when you're ready," Gairovald said as he readied himself, forgetting about all the formalities due to focusing on the oncoming spar, his eyes watching imaginary battles of Isolde and him sparring. I should aim at deflecting the first attack and using that opening to move in closer. The spear has great reach but its damage is all at the tip. If I stay within shaft range, I can limit its viability. My sword is in my left hand so if she strikes from the right I will have to use my arm instead. I should focus a well place unarmed strike on the side of the lance. Otherwise, if I can deflect the attack with my sword, I could possibly keep the blade on shaft top force her movement in some way. Speed is going to be key here so I will have to rush in as fast as I can. Settle it within the first moments. Gairovald certainly wasn't going to take it too easy on Isolde. He has to show her just how fast a battle can end, how fast a life can be taken. Obviously he will stop the blade before it reaches her, but only just before. Though a thought in the back of his mind wondered if she was going to surprise him in any way.

Well, thank goodness that he was doing well. The prospect of facing a skilled swordsman was a bit worrying, but she did have some faith on her abilities in combat. Though she was a bit scared about the sparring match in general that so many questions seem to run in her mind. Even so, she might need to get out of her shy phase and give him her all. Taking her wooden spear to the sparring site, she seemed to be ready, but she felt a little nervous which was a given. The young man might be able to teach her how to fight after all and she could tell that he won't go easy on her. "Alright. I think I'm ready." Brandishing the wooden spear, she lunged forward with the intent of striking his torso area. Perhaps, she wouldn't really go easy on him either, seeing as he was a young man after all.

Immediately changing his sword grip from a reverse grip back to a standard grip, Gairovald stood still and waited for Isolde to get closer, gripped the wooden sword with both hands, and sent a swift strike to the side of her spear with his wooden sword, deflecting her attack. He was not expecting Isolde to charge at him; however the more he thought about it, the more obvious it should have been. She only had experience with training dummies, meaning she has to go on the offensive as dummies do not fight back. Guess she will have to learn that people just don’t let you strike them. Taking advantage of Isolde’s initial forward momentum, after deflecting her attack, Gairovald immediately took a quick step forward, entering the lance’s shaft range, and pointed the tip of the wooden sword at her throat, centimeters away, for just a split second before jumping back—resetting the spar. “A lance’s advantage is its long reach. However, due to basic design as a thrusting weapon, it effectiveness greatly plummets if the opponent enters the shaft’s range. Thus it is in your best interest to keep to keep your opponent outside of this range. Of course, this means your opponents will want to enter and stay in this range.” Immediately after finishing his statement, Gairovald switched back to a reverse grip and took the initiative this time, sprinting at Isolde—ready to parry her next attack.

[Isolde]

The initial attack wasn't so successful as her thrust was deflected by his sword. She realized that he wasn't going to let her strike him and given that it was actually training practice, but she felt that she could've done better. He seemed to state that the lance's advantage was its long grip, but then the disadvantage was that the opponent would be able to tell if it has entered the shaft's range. However, there was no time to think as the young man sprinted forward, attempting to parry her attacks. If she didn't do anything soon, he would be able to know when her next attack was coming. This was actually different than training with dummies as those things didn't really move at all, giving her the advantage to go on the offensive most of the time. Once he reached her side, she immediately deflected the parry and pointed the shaft at his chest, only to stop and gracefully step back. It was times like these that made her think this was actually a serious training session.

As Isolde stepped back, Gairovald stepped forward. Having noted that Isolde is right handed, Gairovald picked up speed and dashed towards her left side, where it would be more difficult for her to thrust at him. As he moved, Gairovald thrust the wooden sword at the side of Isolde neck, centimeters away from making contact, before spinning so her back faced him, swinging the wooden sword at the back of her neck, again avoiding contact but was close enough that she should notice that would have happened if it was a real skirmish. Backing off isn't a bad idea, but she really doesn't seem to be used to playing on the defensive side. So, let's keep her on the defensive. Not giving Isolde any quarter, Gairovald switched to a reverse grip once more; however, rather than striking with the weapon, he sweep kicked her—intending to knock her down. "It may be underhanded, but your enemies will not always be the honorable type. Unarmed strikes can be used to catch someone off-guard for an opening, and an opening is all that is needed to end a life."

The young man seemed to be much calculative in his movements as he proceeded to point his sword at the side of her neck and then spun around while his back was turned, so that he could point his sword at the back of her neck. Two attacks at the same time could get her killed within a moment's notice and probably had a low chance of survival if the second one was the final blow. Skirmishes like these were extremely dangerous to an unprepared individual in the middle of battle. And not to mention that Gairovald had stated that the enemy was less than honorable and attempted to knock her down with a low sweep kick. She'll have to react quickly or she'll be in deep trouble with trying to survive in a real battle where there's enemies in every corner. Fortunately, she managed to sidestep out of the way and aim the shaft of her lance at his neck, only in non-fatal centimeters away. Stepping back once more, she waited silently.

In a real fight, if the deflection was successful, Gairovald would likely be wounded but have an opening to exploit. Time to kick it up a knotch. During the entire spar, Gairovald had a deadpan look on his face, showing no emotion or feeling. Now, as Isolde stepped back to reset the duel, Gairovald's eyes squinted for just a moment before beginning his assault. Earlier as they borrowed the wooden training weapons, Gairovald secretly took a second wooden sword and hid it behind his waist, covered by the cloak he wore. Obviously there was no honor in using a hidden weapon but honor is a luxury that they won't always have. With a plan formulated, Gairovald threw the wooden sword in his hand at Isolde's spear, making sure she would be able to deflect it. Wasting no time, as the sword flew in the air, Gairovald dashed towards Isolde's left before going on a full sprint towards her. The sword was merely a distraction that Gairovald used to close the gap. Of course, to an untrained person, it would seem that Gairovald made a fatal mistake: he was unarmed. However, in truth, he was far from unarmed. As he closed in, he pulled the hidden practice sword with his right hand and swung at Isolde's spear, aiming to pressure her. He gave her a taste of an unorthodox fighting style before, now it was time for the main course. Deliberately leaving a single fatal opening in each move, Gairovald's plan was to bait Isolde into attempting to exploit the opening only for him to dodge the attack and continue pressuring her. It was a tactic he used in his earlier days as a mercenary to directly face enemies that held a severe physical advantage against him. Normally they would be too strong for him to last more than a few blows before falling to their strength. However, by leaving fatal openings he can bait and dodge their predictable attacks, risking instant death for a chance at victory over taking a guaranteed slow defeat from a prolonged fight. It was a highly unorthodox fighting style that left enemies perplexed to how Gairovald was able to survive their onslaught, making him seem stronger than he actually is. Using this tactic, Gairovald would simply continuously pressure Isolde, striking her spear and keeping her on the defensive, showing her the weight of a battle. As their spar continued, he would verbally count each moment in which he could have landed a finishing blow to Isolde. After about ten phantom death strikes, Gairovald would simply back off before saying, "That should be enough for the today. Forgive me if I was too forceful Lady Isolde." With the spar over, Gairovald would refocus his attention to formalities.
