Usually people weren't over all rude to her so that was incredibly fine with the young Taguel, seeing as all she wanted was to make sure she could make a living while on her travels, seeing as she just wanted to make sure she had enough money to survive and afford a roof over her head, seeing as her savings were actually lower than usual. So that said she had found this town with a decently sized market and she was going around seeing if anybody would be interested in actually paying for her work as a tailor, with the weather changes it was going to be needed after all.
She had tried a couple of places that had politely declined her, leaving the girl actually glad she wasn't going to get into any troubles with the locals and all since it wasn't everyone whom could actually put up with a brand new face running around in town. But it was when she reached the last place that she figured she could attempt get something going. However not everything would go as planned.
As much as she tried to try and assure the person that she was no thief but luck wasn't that much on her side. The girl got yelled at for no reason and now this merchant was crying for a guard, claiming she had stolen something from the store when it was a lie. Gods what was up with all the Taguel hate at times... Yet the girl stood her ground, heck if she was going to be called a thief just because someone didn't like her looks. |

I design not in word or talk but in deed and truth
The young man stood in the doorway to the shop, the door closed behind him as he leaned back and exhaled a breath. He'd never get used to that. People smiling at him and waving as he walked down the street out of the blue. As a nobleman he was much more used to people glaring at him, once he'd even had someone pour beer down the front of his shirt in the early months of leading the Eldrich Private Army. Animosity, that he could handle-- but people being so nice to him and thanking him for helping. In truth, it was embarrassing that people were taking notice. He couldn't spend all his time in one place, however helping on farmland, defending the Duchy from Plegian invaders, aiding his father in managing the territory, even running odd errands from time to time for people. If he was to make his home a better place to live, why shouldn't he do thus? Not to mention the public's view of noblemen had deteriorated the past score years giving what semblance of government they had left a bad name. What's more, through the infighting between nobles there were people who simply ran off to pursue their own goals of fighting Grima and the like-- but no one left to deal with domestic affairs. Even if it was only one person who was putting in effort, perhaps it would make the world a little bit better. At least, he'd hoped. Though it was true that the people were less inclined to blame the Eldrich House for their misfortune given the hard work the heir was putting in, it left people looking for a scapegoat to place their hate and so they turned to minorities in whatever form they came in.
The young boy brushed a few stray strands of violet hair from his face and took a few steps forward into the shop. He'd been so focused ducking away out of the public view he hadn't bothered to see where he was. He deduced quickly it was a tailor's shop with the few shelves and mannequins displaying different styles of clothing. Most were of simple design, but a few were very nice, suitable for fancy occasions as he might have participated in his youth. Eric glanced at a cuff of his shirt, running a slender finger over the fraying strands. He hadn't given much credence to his unit leaders laughing of him becoming less a lordling and more a ruffian in appearance even going so far as to suggest he'd need a haircut. He clenched a fist, it was an unforgivable suggestion! His teacher wore his hair as a symbol of pride and so would he! Though... perhaps he should focus less on his pride and more on finding where this tailor was-- perhaps this shirt wasn't so far gone as to not be mend-able. He heard a deep voice coming from the back of the store and followed the sound, peering around a corner only to freeze in his tracks.
What he saw, she was perhaps the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. She didn't bear an icy beauty as the black swan he'd seen at Lord Wrys' Autumn Harvest Feast, but a contrasting warmth that was inviting--. Eric backed out of sight after spending a good few moments just looking at her. What was he thinking? He couldn't let himself be so easily distracted, was this all his self-control amounted to? Now that he thought about it, it seemed funny that he'd react in such a way to someone he'd seen for the very first time. It must have just been his imagination or the lighting had been too perfect or something. He rounded the corner after he'd composed himself. "What seems to be the problem? I'm no guard, however I will do what I can to appease the situation." He looked at the man first, he seemed to be in his mid-forties and no short supply of hair covered his face. The the face hiding behind looked to be ruddy, or maybe he was so mad that it was flushed red? He looked over at the girl but only for a moment as he turned back to the man. He was wrong, she was just as beautiful as the first time he'd seen her. "Well," Eric started as the man finished explaining, "she doesn't look to be a thief. Keeping with protocol I suppose I could search her anyway--" He glanced in her direction only to shake his head pushing the thought from his mind. "Sir, she doesn't have any place to store stolen goods... I'm afraid a search wouldn't do anyone any good." He turned a little red the idea persisting past its welcome.
"My lady, perhaps if you explained your side of the story things would make more sense."

The girl's tail lowered a bit as she took a deep breath and was about to say something when someone else intervened. Just who was this guy for certain, she was not sure but she decided to remain quiet for the time being until the mention of search was mentioned. Her skin felt goosebumps and her tail fur stood on end as she watched the situation unfold into a rather drastic like little situation. No she wasn't going to consent to such a thing.
However soon enough the same man mentioned she had no place to stash anything stolen and actually asked her what had happen. Taking a deep breath, she'd let out some of her frustration before speaking out "My lord" she addressed the man just out of politeness like that "All I was trying to do is find some work as a seamstress so i could save some money for my travels" she admitted with a simple tone of voice "I did not, however, steal anything this man claims I did, all I was trying to do was inquire if he needed someone to help..."
The girl would then lower her head "I'm guessing one Taguel's a thief, every single one is a thief in some peoples mentalities..." she said with a shaky and rather saddened tone. Who could blame the girl? Things were hard as they were for a taguel but being pointed as a thief didn't help either. |

The young man had made sure not to look at the girl for very long whenever he looked in her direction while she spoke. She confirmed his suspicions about being Tanguel and by the looks of it she bore the semblance of a fox. He was able to tell by her tail that twitched behind her and moved as though it were an extension of her emotions. Even her ears that stood at the top of her head gave it away, twitching every so often in irritation at the loud man or perhaps of their own accord. Even the shopkeeper accusing her of being a thief couldn't get past these stark differences, no matter how otherwise similar she was to any other human. Eric looked to him as the girl finished speaking.
"Is this true?" There was a small silence before the man started stumbling over his words, not denying or confirming anything. His actions, however, made it perfectly clear exactly what was going on. "It seems this lady here has done no wrong and in fact even offered you assistance in the coming months. If you didn't need help you should have simply said so." Eric stated calmly, it was a simple and fairly obvious answer. The man's eyes widened at the lord's words and he grumbled about not doing business with any damn animals. Eric's eyes turned icy, a hand fingering the sword on his side. "There are laws protecting the Tanguel within this duchy and as heir to the House Eldrich it is my charge to uphold these laws. Bigotry and racism will only earn you scorn."
With that Eric would grab the girl's hand and lead her out of the shop. There was no further reason for either of them to be there with a man who was so shallow minded. Once they were out of the shop the young lord would turn to the girl, studying her for a moment with indigo orbs before shaking his head. "I'm sorry, not everyone within the territory thinks along the same lines as him." He blinked, remembering himself. "My name is Eric, by the way." It was only after he introduced himself that he noticed he was still holding her hand. His eyes widened a little and he quickly let go. Now that he'd let go of her he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with his hand, it seemed awkward just hanging at his side. Why did he have to be so awkward?

Well she was innocent and she wasn't going to let anybody say otherwise, she had promised herself that long ago since she was a kid to not let anybody push her around.
And then she felt someone grab her hand and pull her outside, snapping her out of her thinking moment before quickly regaining her balance and following Eric outside and after a bit they came to a stop. He introduced himself, leaving it to her to introduce herself
"I'm Hibiki. And thank you for the help back there..." she said softly before shaking her head "Oh I'm aware that not everybody acts like that man did but its a bit needless to say I feel a bit upset over it" who could blame her? Hibiki, huh? It was a strange name. Perhaps all Tanguel had names like that? Whether or not that was the case, it made her unique. She looked a lot less agitated now than before, so that was a good first step. "Hibiki," He tested the name, it was a good name for her after all... or would she have made any name sound good? "it was the right thing to do. I can't abide people like that, especially when they try to take advantage of a girl. I mean, it's just natural for a guy to want to protect a girl if she's in trouble." He shrugged suddenly feeling like the conversation was heading in a weird direction. Maybe it wasn't heading in a weird direction but rather he was opening up a little too fast. This all was just a little too out of character for him-- why was he so nervous around her to begin with? He couldn't think of anything. Maybe if he ignored it, it'd go away? It hadn't yet, but it was worth a shot and seemed to work with a lot of other emotions.
"So, you're looking for a job? Have you tried any other places? I'd think someone'd want help getting prepared for the cold season." He thought aloud to himself. Then again, with the economy as it was, perhaps it was less not needing help and more not being able to afford taking out extra staff. Or maybe they weren't sure what kind of credentials she had and couldn't afford taking on an unknown variable when managing a business. Eric could somewhat relate with how he'd seen Lucca when she'd first joined the duchy's army. It'd only been through hard work and diligence she'd risen through the ranks to become the cavalry unit's leader. At first he'd thought she was a bit rash, impatient, and rebellious-- but her hot streak had shaped her into a valuable asset that people would follow into battle. Unlike this circumstance, however, it seemed her potential clients weren't willing to go beyond what little they knew about her and take a chance.

That said the girl took a deep breath "Gentlemen like you are rare..." she muttered a bit before closing her eyes for a moment.
Her lips curled up in a smile as she perked up and then rubbed the back of her neck "I tried, that place was the last place that could actually use my services... you saw the results of me trying" she mentioned as she opened her bright amber eyes "My mother taught me all I know... when she passed on and my father disappeared i sold off the little home i lived in and just set out to travel..." she said as her tail flicked a bit behind her.
She'd then shake her head "But I am not here to bother you with my life story, so don't worry about me" she said gently, trying to be humble. Her hand reached for her hair as she pushed a few strands away from her eyes and looked around before sighing "Guess I'm going to have to find some other way to get some money to save up and all..." it was a bit of a predicament but what else could she do. |

That smile though. Somehow it seemed almost contagious. Eric shook his head fervently, his hair fluttering about his shoulders, "You're not a bother. Not in the least. I don't mind hearing about you." He caught himself, fluidly tacking on an explanation, "It helps me relate. I mean, you wouldn't believe me when I speak of how sheltered I'd been... so I like hearing other people's stories." He said that, but he couldn't imagine how painful it must have been for her to have lost everything. She seemed like a normal girl, but even though she was about his age she'd already been through so much. That much he could relate to at least-- being forced to take on responsibility and mature to fit a role expected of him. For her it was a necessity for survival, for him it was for the survival of his home.
Eric seemed to grasp the situation she was in more firmly now. She'd been busy looking for work long before he'd arrived and had only seen her latest attempt. His eyebrows came together a tad as he thought to himself for a moment. It was dangerous for her to be traveling about on her own, that much was for certain. Even just advertising herself around town as a seamstress could potentially attract the wrong sort of attention. By whatever stroke of luck she hadn't run into anyone with malintent, or perhaps had the sense to avoid such people. Whichever the case, there didn't seem to be a good answer to her current problem. "What other kind of work would you consider?" He tilted his head, mostly just curious what other skills she had.

Could she actually do other things? Well she wasn't all that stupid and had tended to her mother multiple times before the woman had passed on. She'd take a bit of a sigh "I know how to cook... hunt... and sow. That's the three things i've leaned to do so far in my life. Then again i'm still young" she admitted a bit bashfully
That said she doubted there was much this new person could do for her, seeing as all she wanted was to find either a place to be or at least some closure on her father. The girl then rubbed her neck "I do tend to shift for the hunt, I find my fox form a bit more useful for the long treks of hunts and the likes" she admitted, even if usually shifting wasn't something she did very often anymore.

Eric felt his face heat up a little bit, how could anyone be this cute? Honestly it was beyond rational. But now that she'd said it, he did wonder at how old she was. She couldn't have been much order than himself simply based on looks alone, then again he'd never been such a good judge at ages. The young man pushed thoughts of age and appearance aside and honestly considered her for a moment. A young woman talented enough in sewing to pursue a career in it who also knew how to hunt for food and cook. Then again, he'd forgotten for a moment that she did have her bestial form as well making her anything but defenseless. With this in mind what sort of jobs was she able to perform? "The way I see it, there is a job I could give you that comes to mind. My full name is Eric Eldrich, the son of the current duke presiding over this territory. I wouldn't be able to promise you work among the estate staff as that would ultimately fall under my father's jurisdiction-- however if you wish, I would hire you to do odd jobs around the barracks." He smiled and scratched a cheek with a finger, "In truth, we currently don't have anyone with any practical skills whatsoever. So having someone be able to mend clothes, cook, and clean while aiding in hunts as we tour the country would be of great help."
"You would still be able to come and go as you see fit, however you would be paid by the day. A standard salary I think. And for living conditions... you would be provided a room within the estate should you wish." He tilted his head, was that everything? He hadn't exactly explained she'd be picking up after a literal army, but that wasn't such a bad thing was it? "Of course you can quit at any time should the job prove to be too much or if you just feel it's time to move on." He added on the end, giving her an out if she took the job. It was going to be hard work, but if she wanted a job perhaps this would solve her problem?

When Eric spoke about who he was she... felt a bit surprised to say the least. Let alone when he started to go more into detail about how he could help her and all. Was he just... offering her a job out of nowhere? The girl fumbled for words a bit as she spoke out "I..." she'd take a moment before taking a deep breath.
Believe it or not Hibiki wasn't used to people being nice to her, being the kind that fend off most things on her own. Not the best way to grow up but it built character none the less. Fumbling a bit on her words still, she took a moment to regain her composure she would look at him "...Why would you offer a complete stranger such a thing?" not that she doubted him, no. She was just a bit confused with the sudden kindness of this man out of nowhere.
She'd take the offer in a heartbeat but she had to think this through. A full time job, with the possibility of travel and a roof over her head again? Ah to hell with it "...I'll take the offer... I don't wish to seem like i am trying to spit on your offer, just i was caught a bit off guard" who could indeed blame the taguel? She was sure a lot of people would've killed for such an offer.
That said her tail seemed to show just a bit of how she felt right now, that hint of excitement. Usually her tail and ears was what gave off most signs of her emotions so usually she was a girl of very few words. |

He couldn't help but smile at her reaction. Maybe it was because he was doing something cool for another person that made him happy, it also could have been she seemed so surprised by the offer and her reactions were slaying him. How was it possible for someone to get cuter by the minute? Did she even know this was how she was acting and how absurdly adorable it was? Even her distrust of his intentions and the way she seemed to struggle internally for a moment before accepting the job. Her tail flicked about behind her and her ears stood on end, still giving off a happy and unexpectedly energetic vibe though her voice was meek and she spoke somewhat timid.
"I can understand your concern and I apologize how suddenly I sprung this on you. While you may not believe me not everyone has a talent for what you can do and your skills would prove most invaluable." He gave her a reassuring grin. "Can you imagine? It's been days and I still haven't gotten my shirt fixed yet." He joked as he unbuttoned his vest to expose his shirt. The cloth was torn on his left side a clean line that looked like what a sword might leave should it get a glancing hit in.

Her hand reached for her chin for a moment as she would ponder "That can be fixed easily and with no real bother truth is told" she admitted as she would think for a moment. She had the materials needed with her, just some thread and a needle, maybe a bit of a wash and the garment would be as good as new. Then again she was more curious over the man that had just offered her a job.
She knew a bit of who he was but what else could she thing of him? She didn't know him... then again she didn't know barely anybody but... it was then that she noticed that he kept gazing at her. A single shiver went up her spine as she looked away rather nervously "I guess we should make haste so i can go grab my things no?"
How had she missed it? He seemed to just look at her so intensively but seeing as she at times saw it hard to simply read someone less she paid close attention. Sure she had a bit of a thing for details but it was mostly when she was focused on work and not in regular interaction. At times she wondered what would've been to have real friends when growing up and not have being a socially outcast kid? or having lived in such a small village. The limits were endless. |

I design not in word or talk but in deed and truth
The young man tilted his head, his indigo hair shifting a bit at the action as he listened intently to Hibiki. He could only imagine what sorts of things she had with her in her travels. She'd said she sold off her home, so whatever she had would be what little she took with her. He gave her a glance before nodding in agreement. He thought he'd felt the gravity of her situation before, but it seemed he'd only touched on the tip of the iceberg with what she'd sacrificed to be where she was now. "Whatever you need to take care of, we should do it now. It's a bit of a ride back to the estate and we should get there before sundown, lest we be easier prey for robbers and the like." He agreed with her presently.
Eric had noticed something different with the way she was acting now, perhaps a bit more self-conscious than before. Whatever was the case, she seemed to lose a bit of her enthusiasm. With her thoughts on getting a job and what sort of work she would do she'd seemed rather excited and eager to get started. Now, it seemed she'd lost a bit of that. What was she thinking that she wasn't telling him? It'd be rude to ask, and perhaps even more rude to guess. If she'd said what was on her mind, that'd have been one thing but she hadn't said a word about it. Maybe it didn't have to do with him and he was just being conceited? Now that he was second guessing himself, he wasn't sure whether it was anything to make such a big deal about in the first place.
He had always been expected to lead, he had been told at a young age that he would succeed the late Exalt and in time would lay claim to the throne of Ylisse. Even so, he hadn't had many friends. In his early days he'd been taken to parties and balls where he'd been exposed to the many noble families within Ylisse and taken to see the many duchies that his country consisted of. He was shown first hand the state the country lay in after the Exalt's death. When he'd turned six, it was then he'd been jailed within the estate expected to pursue his studies. Every so often he'd found respite in visiting the capitol or living out in the wilderness for a time-- but for the most part he'd been isolated from the rest of the world until his sixteenth birthday. The day he had taken control of his life and made the first step to changing the world in a beneficial way.
"Hibiki, I don't mean to pry--" He hesitated, "Umm, what sort of family did you grow up with? You don't have to say if you don't wish-- but I'd like to get to know you better." He turned his face away a bit to hide the fact it'd turned a little red.

For a moment it was silent before he asked her something. Hibiki would sigh a bit "Well..." she would take a moment to rationalize her train of though before talking.
"My mother was a feroxian that had left her country in search of a better life. She met my father once and after they separated it seemed like every time they were somewhere they kept bumping into each other" she girl said taking a soft breath "In a matter of months he asked her to marry him and for two years they were just a couple. My dad was a knight and until he found out my mother was carrying me he spent time out getting money for the two of them with his work..."
Her lips curled into a bit of a smile as they walked "...When i was born father dearest settled down in the village and helped my mother raise me... Until i was twelve. He then decided to go back out and that..." she trailed off. Hibiki's ears dropped "Was the last time we heard of him... My mother did not bode well with the news and lost another child she was carrying and after that she was immensely depressed..." she'd trail off again and sighed "I took care of her for a large portion of time until she got back on her feet. Things seemed better until little over a year ago"
As they reached the inn, she girl stopped and looked at him "She grew ill and passed away... I took care of her funeral and such and then sold off everything and set out on adventure to see if i could find any trace of my father... and that's that." she said before looking at the inn and groaned "I'll be right back, going to go pay my night that i stayed over and grab my things.. wont be too long, I swear" she said with a smile, seeming to have perked up a bit. Then again that had just been a large story. |
