BIO
• Has a brother and a sister.
• His sister eloped and has had several children.
• He doesn't know where she is.
• His brother died in an unfortunate incident.
So, let's talk about his early life for a bit. Now, manaketes are these creatures that live a long-ass time in the deserts of Plegia, and that's not really interesting to talk about. Neither is Kien's home life, either, because he's got a brother and sister, and that's really about it. Oh yeah, his sister eloped with her then-boyfriend and had several kids that she mentioned in a letter to him. Kien doesn't know who her boyfriend is, but he sure as heck hopes he doesn't have to meet him.
Like, he heard that her boyfriend (or maybe husband?) was a really strong fighter. He doesn't want to cross paths with him. Kien's brother had opposed the courtship, because manaketes live for a really long time, and his sister was going to outlive her partner, and maybe even her kids. That wasn't a good thing. Sadness wasn't a good thing. His brother died before his sister did, though. The incident was a murky one; to put it simply, it was like a bucket of sandy water -- where the sands had sank to the bottom of the pail, and bringing it up again would only cause headaches and everything to go awry. Kien didn't wish for that.
Oh, and he might have learnt how to fight with a polearm along the way.
• Worked briefly as a mercenary-for-hire.
• Quit the job when he destroyed more than he should have.
Okay, so when we say briefly, it's actually way more than brief. Kien's sense of time is warped, after all. What seems like a short time to him may be an eternity for other people. Back to the mercenary bit -- don't trust everything he says. He did work as a mercenary-for-hire briefly, and did drop the job like a hot potato when he screwed up. But what he doesn't say is the fact that he actually ended up gathering his own merry band of friends, took up some quests, and reaped the profits first-hand. Being for-hire wasn't exactly profitable, and he did like having a comfortable amount of money to fall back on.
And because he still had many, many more years to live, he decided to spend it all and start anew. There was nothing else that interested him after a few decades at the job; it was getting boring. To put it simply, it was time to start a New Game and drop the Continue.
Right, during this stint, he did improve on his polearm-wielding skills. But let's be real, he didn't want to reveal that he was a manakete, and preferred doing the paperwork and negotiating bits of the whole business. He told people that he "felt squeamish at the sight of blood."
• He would prefer to live as a human ...
• ... But he kept getting screwed over.
Remember, he had started a New Game and all, right? The goal: To live like a human being would. He had a fair amount of confidence here, having successfully ran and disbanded his own mercenary group and all. Too bad it wasn't all sunshine and daisies as he tried to be something he wasn't.
Being scouted as a wyvern-handler because of his affinity with dragons wasn't something he expected to have happen. But it did, so it might have been luck after all, right?
Also, what were the chances of actually having his hand asked in marriage by a lord's daughter? Pretty low, right?
How about having the stables he was working at get set on fire by a fellow manakete on a rampage, who once knew his brother, and recognized him for who he was? Kind of impossible, right?
Well, fate kinda showed Kien the middle finger for his hubris. Or something like that. He didn't get exposed (thankfully), but he was kind of shunned the upper community for his, uh, bad luck and general fuckuppance. So he lost this game, and lost it hard.
So he decided to wait for another century or so, until everyone forgot or was too old to remember, and as the saying goes: Life goes on.
• Currently holds a position as a banquet attendant for Plegian royalty.
Much, Much Later ...
Kien caught wind that the Plegian royal kitchens were hiring. They needed potato-peelers and carrot-choppers and maybe even meat-mincers. They needed more hands in the kitchens, and Kien applied for a job there. He was hired later on, and he continued to assume the role of a human being.
Despite his awkward grip on the knife at the start of his job, Kien improved on his skills and got a promotion from kitchen scullion to kitchen grunt, which in hindsight, wasn't much of an improvement. Still, hard work paid off, and Kien eventually rose to the rank of banquet attendant.
Over the years, his skill with the polearm was still relatively honed, but his true calling wasn't that of a warrior. It was hairstyling. He had seen many hairstyles and fads come and go throughout the years, but there had never been a demand for hairstylists ... everyone was too busy fighting over something to give a damn about their hair.
But even as a young manakete (he was still plenty young now by manakete standards, but humans were different), he had wanted to style hair and see people go from peasant to presentable, and to have beautifully-managed hair to go with their equally-beautiful outfits. Using a polearm did kind of translate to using hairpins and combs ... or maybe he was just lying to himself about his skill with the polearm. Hairpins (maybe darts?) were more of his style than polearms, anyway.
One day, he'll rise high enough in the kitchens to ask to be transferred to a different sector of the castle ...
But until then ...
Life goes on ...
OTHER
• Transformed state has black scales that shimmer red.
• Has very pale skin.
• A skilled hairstylist, but no one has a need for that nowadays.
• Disinterested in worldly affairs ...
• ... as he is more concerned with self-preservation.
• Fares better in one-on-one interactions than group ones.
