BIO
• Reuben’s birth was a result of the courtship between a woman of nobility and her knight in shining armor. Such a relationship was short-lived, because as soon as she grew tired, she quickly cut all ties. Unknowingly, she had already begun to carry Reuben within her.
• That was only the start of later problems. His mother was already married, and the child within her didn't belong to her husband. At first, it wasn’t obvious that the baby boy born wasn't his. For the first year of Reuben’s life, he was treated like any other noble’s child. He doesn’t have the memory, but he was well cared for.
• However, as Reuben grew older, it became obvious from his physical appearances that he was not the true son of the person he thought of as his father. He’s heard his mother muttering to herself, in shock at the resemblance he held to that former knight she had romanced.
• Once the truth was revealed, at the young age of eight he became an outcast in the family. Older siblings were taught to avoid him whenever they could. Accepting an illegitimate child would be harmful for the family’s reputation, and that was the last thing the father wanted. Even his own mother would avoid talking to him, as if it were a way to make up with her husband. The only sign she gave that she still cared for him were through the few words that were exchanged.
• Growing up as an outcast in the family affected his upbringing. It was unanimously, and silently, decided upon that he was to be seen and not heard from. It was better that he did not appear in front of important guests, in case they began asking questions. The topic of his birth came up amongst outsiders, but-- as if avoiding the subject would make the gossip stop-- his family pretended he was just a stranger living under the same roof.
• Despite being cast aside by his father and siblings, Reuben found a friend in his tutor. To further prevent more disgrace upon the family, it was essential to educate the young boy. Reuben was given a tutor in order to be given some education. He learned to read and do basic arithmetic, but there was no need for him to learn the same things as his siblings. He’d never get to sit in the royal court. Initially they were unfriendly to each other, but the old man who taught him became the closest thing he had to a father. Reuben enjoyed the man’s company and looked for chances to spend time together.
• Eventually, Reuben became interested in the use of magic. The idea that he could use text that lay on a page to create phenomena in the world intrigued him. Bringing up the subject to his teacher, Reuben spent hours secretly scouring over musty books in his family’s private library in order to understand how magic worked.
• Self-taught, Reuben spent three years working on his ability to use magic. He managed to buy himself his first tome by doing odd jobs around the home for his own spending money. Asking his mother or father was out of the question. He had practiced under the advice of his tutor, which usually revolved around him panicking while his tutor yelled at him.
•Eventually he desired to leave home and explore the world. Obviously not welcome at home, it would make more sense to leave when he grew old enough to take care of himself. Whatever he could scavenge at home came with him in a simple bag. His teacher was the only one who knew, and pointed him in the direction of the Ylissean forces. It seemed like a good idea to join up with a group that could watch over him in some way.
OTHER
• His favorite activity is reading. He is particularly fascinated by stories of heroes and their exploits.
• His most prized possession is a small, leather-bound notebook. He likes to take down notes on whatever he learns.
