BIO
• Ansehelm had always been a strange child. His father, a mortician residing in the Plegian capital, was a spiteful, despicable man, driven to the brink of madness by his many years as an undertaker. For much of his early childhood, Ansehelm often found himself isolated from the outside world, contained within the cold walls of his family’s morgue, with only the fresh corpses of the recently deceased for company. He spent much of his time closely perusing his father’s anatomical books, as well as observing his work firsthand. He even applied his knowledge to some of the corpses, cutting them open and digging around inside whenever his father was occupied elsewhere.
• As the years went by, Ansehelm grew to despise his father. His disdain towards his captor amplified with each passing day. At the age of 16, Ansehelm acted upon his hatred, stabbing and killing his father with one of his own tools as he slept. In order to hide what he had done, he then proceeded to torch his father’s body as well as the entire morgue, claiming that it had started from a fallen lantern and that he was the only survivor. Due to his father’s negative reputation, nobody cared enough to question the validity of his story.
• Now that his lifelong prison had been reduced to nothing more than a smoldering pile of ashes, Ansehelm had nowhere to go and no means to sustain himself. Utilizing his anatomical knowledge as well as his capacity for cruelty, he earned himself an apprenticeship in the field of “coercive information gathering,” or as the general public would call it, interrogation. During his apprenticeship, he developed an interest in wartime strategy, frequently spending his leisure time studying old Plegian war records, even discussing them at length with the royal family’s tactician at the time. Ansehelm spent about two years as an apprentice before being promoted to a full-time torturer.
• Within a year of becoming an interrogator, Ansehelm swiftly became notorious for his high success rate, as well as his brutal methods of coercion. Additionally, he also became highly regarded by the royal tactician, who was impressed with his superb work ethic and the speed with which he grasped the art of war. The tactician, keenly aware of his old age and the need for a successor, decided to take Ansehelm under his wing. After training under his mentor for 4 years, Ansehelm was appointed to the position of royal tactician after his teacher’s passing.
• Shortly after attaining the position, Ansehelm became intrigued with old accounts of a woman being able to create Risen. Thinking that such a skill would be a massive asset to Plegia’s military, he began to undergo intensive research on the subject, unbeknownst to all but the very highest authority of Plegia. Eventually, he succeeded in his goal; however, only the Grimleal were able to control his creations, much to his chagrin. After the outbreak of civil war between the Grimleal and the Plegian royal family, Ansehelm resumed his research on the undead beings, tirelessly searching for a way to force the royal family’s will upon them.
