THE LONG VERSION... IF YOU DARE (it's not as well-organized)
• Mom's name was Lacie, Dad's name was Feroz. Matthias was the product of an arranged marriage, though it was a quite happy one. He spent his early life being coddled, and grew up thinking that he was better than the rest and entitled to everything. Though this calmed down somewhat as he grew older, he never quite shook the feeling that he was, indeed, better than the rest.
• He was 14 when the second war between Ylisse and Plegia began. He desperately wanted to join in, but his father vetoed the action in perhaps one of the only shows of parental discipline he ever truly stuck with. Feroz lost a lot of people in his life to the first war, and didn't want his son being a part of that. After enough whining and prodding from his wife, he acquiesced, but only if Matthias was taught how to use a sword and lance first.
• Except, his father never actually planned to ever let Matthias join the army, because that's just ridiculous. Matthias was all like 'dad why i wanna beat people up' and he was like 'no way' and they argued and trained together a lot. Lacie was all like 'you goddamn kids' and took up the habit of leaving without disturbing them, especially if she were going to someplace nearby.
• She went missing. After enough questioning, a servant confessed she spoke to Lacie beforehand - the woman had just promised them not to talk about it. She had been going to a nearby village, to say hello to a friend and give them a birthday present. However, she didn't come back. When they investigated the ruins of the village, they found a lot of dead bodies, traces of Risen, and some of her belongings. No survivors were found.
• Feroz didn't take losing his wife well. Like, at all. Matthias took it slightly better, but not by much. He became somewhat cold, harsher, and more withdrawn - and his father treated him worse, as if he blamed him for his mother's death as well as himself. Matthias trained now, willingly, and away from his father, nursing something of a grudge against the Risen as well.
• He was 16 when war began anew. Ylisse was going to tango with Valm. In all honesty, Matthias wasn't a dancer, and this metaphor is stupid i hate myself why is this history so goddamn long even when i'm intentionally abridging i-- ahem. Anyway, Matthias didn't join this war either. It wasn't worth it to argue with his father. He was able to join the Ylissean guard, though, and kept risen away from the capital. It was around this time that he actually began to formulate his plans.
• Not long after Grima plunged into the oceans, Matthais' father died under mysterious circumstances. The rumors went something along the lines of 'i cannot Believe that his jerk kid would kill him', but there was never an investigation (dead nobles are getting preeetty common) and, well, he was kind of a jerk anyway.
• With his father out of the way, and his assets all gained, Matthais began the long process of gaining enough support, and the position of Ylisse's Steward. To outside people, he was known as a disciplined, driven, and patient man - perhaps with a bit of a distaste for Plegians, and sure, he could be a bit arrogant in his posturing, but that wasn't so bad. Lots of nobles were like that.
• In truth, Matthais dabbled in more than a few shady dealings, bribed and even killed his way to his position. No big surprise - somewhere along the way he grew a hateful, sadistic streak, and in a way, his 'noble goal' of erasing the plegians is just a bad coverup for his violence and general terrible behavior.
• It was a long, 20-year endeavor. Along the way, he met and married a woman named Gracelia, and even started a family with her. However, he soon grew fed up with him, and left - taking the children with her. He came up with a cover story along the lines of 'they got killed by Risen', and left it at that.
• When he finally gained the title of Steward, he busied himself sowing war as best he could - funding bandits to attack Ylissean and Feroxi cities, dressed as Plegians would, and paying them to dress as Ylisseans and attack Plegian cities. His goal: Wipe Plegia off the map, and kill every last fellblood that could possibly be used to revive Grima.
OTHER
He holds most people at arm's length, and treats them with an air of disgust. Matthias is generally quite stoic and impassive. He's capable of feigning emotions, though he rarely even needs to - he's known for his stiff upper lip. Usually, he doesn't let on how much he probably doesn't like you unless you're a Plegian. He isn't above torturing and killing people, especially if they're Plegian, and he takes quite a bit of pleasure out of it. He would optimally ally himself with the Knights of Cydonia, even fund them, even though he probably causes a lot of their problems. Oops.
He does not like non-divine dragon manaketes. He'd consider killing them all too, but he's not about to go toe to toe with a bunch of dragons without backup.
Don't call him Matt he'll break your neck. (He won't actually break your neck, he'll just squint really dangerously at you.)
His father's lineage is known for having gold eyes.
