• Spero nos omnes, ruat caelum cadere: Hope guide us all, though the heavens may fall. The Spera family motto has remained the same through countless generations, and throughout the multitudes of wars and the rise of Grima, such words came as hope itself. In such times of war and despair, the Spera house aided mainly through hospitality, along with a few soldiers sent to the front-lines then and then. The Duke and the Duchess advocated for safety for all people of Ylisse, and instead of actions towards ending the wars on the front-lines, the Spera household worked towards protection of its nation, and all those who needed it. Hope for the future brought them to this conclusion, but it was also hope for the heir of the Spera family. The Duchess and Duke had a son before the Ylissean-Plegian War, and his birth affected the actions made by the Spera house. The Duchess wanted a world where their newborn son could live in in happiness, one without hatred, pain, or anger: a reasonable goal and one made out of love that the Duke himself could not neglect. Their decision caused their house to work towards protection for the Ylissean people throughout the consecutive wars, and subsequently, Grima's return. Even if it was dark times then, the Spera family refused to give up on the people they worked so hard for, continuing to have hope. The house did as much as it could for the Ylissean people and others, and as much as the Duke and Duchess wanted to provide as much aide to all that needed it, the danger of the Risen and the Grimleal still remained, and any risks to aid the entire nation would most likely end in failure. Defending, housing, feeding, and providing a beacon of light, however, still stood as the goal of the Spera family, and when Grima was defeated and the total threat gone, only then did the heaven's light shine upon the family in the form of peace for the land and the young heir.
• Gaius was born with the one hope, that perhaps one day, he unite the surrounding nations under one title. Such a goal was obviously deemed impossible, but nonetheless, the Duchess herself wanted her son to live a life of happiness, so that he would come to understand that peace is the greatest desire of all. Growing up to his early years of childhood, Gaius didn't understand the concepts of war and despair, but was interested in his ventures with his mother. Up until before Grima's defeat, Gaius spent most of his life with his mother, being taken around the kingdom and to nearby villages. The young heir didn't understand anything that was going on, but he did know that his mother made people happy. The Duchess tended to those that needed hospitality. She brought joy and hope to people, allowing them to find safety during the war. Because of her, the gaiety that existed in such events was the one thing that started to embed itself in Gaius' mind. Even if he was still so young, having experienced such events through his infancy and early childhood, he noticed signs of kindness with his mother and started to believe that perhaps compassion was all that the world needed.
• Once Grima was defeated and peace started to descend on the world, the Spera house's main course of action was to return all travelers seeking hospitality back to their homes. On the other hand, for those that found Spera to be a house worth living under, they stayed close to them, living in new and old spaces that the house provided. The entire process for this took quite some time, and during this period, it was also a stepping stone in the Gaius' life. Having grown out of infancy and starting his childhood years in rather peaceful times, it was time for Gaius to learn how to live like a noble. However, having spent so much time with his mother, the young heir responded hesitantly to the teachings. At first, Gaius was willing, believing in his father's words that the teachings would benefit the heir as he grew. However, as the lessons progressed with time, it soon became apparent that Gaius found distaste for the lessons. In fact, he didn't see any reason in why he had to live the life of a noble. If he could at least bring happiness to everyone, then wouldn't just showing compassion be enough? With this kind of attitude, altercations rose with how Gaius' future would go, but the one to settle these childish thoughts was the Duchess herself. The two ended up discussing together why Gaius found the noble life unreasonable, and upon hearing that he wanted to make everyone happy the same way his mother did in the past, she ended up explaining the situation of their family and why they were there. It was a rather long and strenuous talk, but not once did she falter. She wanted Gaius to accept this path and be able to create a life that would provide peace and happiness for everyone with him as their leader. For Gaius, the persuasion brought many questions to the situation where questions would link to another and so on and so forth; however, with the extended conversation, eventually, Gaius was able to grasp a small part of being a noble: one who will bring happiness to others through leadership. His mother knew that he still had much to learn about his bloodline and his future, but for now, she accepted the childish definition of a noble and knew that Gaius would grow to be an excellent Duke of Spera, one day. For the young heir of Spera, he willingly accepted the role of nobility and promised to his mother that he would do his best from then on, for her, their family, and every kind person that he encountered. The two had their moment of connection, and with a dispute settled, Gaius could continue his life of nobility for now.
• From that night on for years to come, Gaius took his noble duties fairly seriously, adapting to them as time passed by. Gaius' classes also took a turn in the right direction: he started to try to understand the reasoning behind being a noble and what it meant for society. This new mindset, created with strong aid from his mother, guided the heir into accepting his nobility; however, the boy continued to look to his mother and father for guidance or answers to questions about this life when he needed it, receiving well-thought out answers and conversations about the matter. It was these things that brought Gaius to accepting his noble position, but it was because of his want to aid the people that lived under the Spera house that Gaius truly accepted his role as heir to the Duke of Spera. Because of this, when news came that the Spera family was expecting another child, Gaius swore to himself that his brother or sister would be raised with a clear reason to live as a noble: to grant the world happiness.
• Just as Gaius' childhood life was coming to an end, the second heir to the Spera family was born. The boy's birth was celebrated amongst the entire house, having had a child that could live in peace and serenity away from the cold truth of war. After all, everyone was in high spirits after the nightmare that was Grima, and this was truly a time of celebration. For the first heir, he too was ecstatic about the situation. He had a younger brother, somebody who he could relate to and have fun with; however, it wasn't just that that got Gaius excited about the newborn. Gaius could help raise his brother to become a great noble, and in the end, they'd both be able to focus on spreading kindness to the world. While the newborn was growing up and whenever Gaius had free time, the two spent the time together with their mother, subsequently creating a deeper bond between the eldest son and the Duchess and allowing the older brother to take care of his little brother. It was also during this time that the Duchess of Spera decided to take her newborn son to the villages near the castle, wanting to share the magnificent news to all. Subsequently, this act was also done, in part, to allow Gaius to see for himself how much life had changed from the past when he was only a small child. When Gaius came upon the villages himself, the details came as a sudden interest: liveliness had improved immensely, trade was bustling fairly well, the faces of kids, adolescents, and adults were all filled with gaiety. Everything was simply divine to the boy, and comparing the situation to what he learned as a noble, the details seemed somewhat similar. The Spera house worked for the peace and happiness throughout countless wars. From the scenery, from the environment, from the tomfoolery and jolly merriment, Gaius could assure himself and his brother that being a noble was for this.
• The years went by as the new heir grew into a young boy. Gaius, during this time, was always diligent during his classes, having been inspired by the sight of happiness and peacefulness. Having taken his nobility seriously, the heir wanted to be the example that people could follow, just like his own parents. He wanted to be someone who could lead his nation into such serenity, and he wanted his brother to be able to do the same. However, entering into his adolescent life, Gaius soon found that being apart of nobility didn't just mean you had to know your history surrounding your family and your nation, you had to build a good reputation, you had to have ethical and orderly manners, etc. The peace-loving and cordial boy soon found that having to deal with conflicts through combat, not just diplomacy, was an important factor to a house. It was in these years that the Duke of Spera decided that it was time for his son to learn how to handle combat, and unfortunately, Gaius had an immediate hesitation to the subject: the adolescent believed that there was no reason to fight another being; everything could be solved without harming one another. However, through long, stern talks about the subject of combat, and subsequently war with his father, Gaius eventually gave in. The young adolescent tried his best to understand the rhyme and reason behind fighting, and it was a hard thing for him to do. For all of his life, he believed that peaceful interaction, kindness, compassion... all of those things were just enough to settle altercations. Resorting to combat as an answer, it just didn't run well for Gaius. Nonetheless, Gaius continued the combat lessons, learning the basics, but heading at a slow rate: his frustration and confusion remained in the heir's mind.
• For a method of coping and a way to ease the mind, whenever Gaius had free time, he used it on trips to the surrounding towns beyond the castle grounds instead of aiding his brother for the future years ahead. Whenever Gaius left the castle, he did so without alerting anyone of his leave, but his parents knew at one point and he eventually knew that they knew through his brother. The Duke had a serious tone on the matter, wanting his son to focus on his duties rather than messing around, but the Duchess was steadfast on the situation, wanting their son to learn on his own, or else, as a Duke, he'd fail his own duties; after all, he was growing to be of age and the boy had to think for himself. Nevertheless, the Duke acquiesced to his wife, allowing their son to find himself. So, Gaius ended up spending time amongst his beloved people, learning about their lives and developing close bonds with all of them, but for his brother, he was starting his childhood. However unlike his older brother, he was starting to learn about the noble life at a much earlier age. For the entire house, teaching the young boy was much easier to do so than with Gaius: the eldest had been born during a time of war and developed different beliefs with the time spent with his mother. Now, Gaius did find out about this eventually, but there was nothing he could do, other than give advice to his little brother. He wanted to affirm that the house's goal was to bring peace and happiness to the world, and the younger brother questioned him on the subject. The discussion started to become a large back and forth of question and answer, debate and reason, and there seemed to be no end to the situation; however, their conversation ended with Gaius' brother coming out with the idea that peace is a desire that all everyone wants, something that they could both understand. Yet, even if they could agree on one thing, it was apparent that with age, beliefs would change.
• The rest of Gaius' adolescent years went by fairly the same, functionally: learning from lectures and classes, training in combat and the way of the sword, something he didn't feel a large attachment to, traveling to the towns, and spending whatever time left over with his brother. Interaction with his parents, on the other hand, was kept to a minimum; however, there were times that Gaius did end up going to his mother for guidance. He needed an easier way to deal with the conflicting beliefs, but all she could tell him was to follow what he believed the right path was. In the end, the right path would lead to the happiness of the people, but for Gaius, his mind conflicted on this. From all the research he had done, from all the questions he had asked, everything was settled by wars, bringing peace. Even the period he was born in was considered war, and now, he lived in peaceful times. Gaius simply just didn't understand fighting at all. At the start, he wanted all people to live in happiness, growing up with lessons, he wanted people to live in peacefulness, guided by him, and now, at the end, Gaius would have to fight, disrupting peace, to bring peace and happiness. The entire situation confused the heir, but for his own brother, now growing to the late years of his childhood, he felt no confusion over combat. His brother was raised from the start by his mother and father, taught to have noble ideals, but also to advocate for peace. If fighting was to bring peace, then he was willing to engage. Gaius was befuddled by this when he learned of such notions, but having learned this from his own brother, it was different from hearing it from his mother or father or anything else. Nevertheless, the old adolescent tried to adapt his brother's thoughts around his, to smooth his mind and try to bring reason to the definitions of nobility. His beliefs had to have changed at one point, and this was it for Gaius.
• From that point on, guiding Gaius into his adult years, he thought hard and long about the full cycle of peace and war, trying to find a reasonable middle ground. If the peacefulness and the happiness of the people that his family took care of for so long was on the line, then Gaius would have to find out how to solve it. Would he dare try and use peaceful negotiations, trying to seek kindness between both parties, if the happiness of his people that he cares and loves would be diminished? No, he wouldn't...He'd fight...He'd fight. He'd fight to protect them. If he didn't...Then what peace would there be for him, his family, his friends, and the people who entrusted their lives to his family? When Gaius entered his adult years, he told himself that he was willing to face the duties of a noble. If fighting was to break out, then he'd have to settle it. He'd protect his people and fight to end a war as well. He'd take care of his people, and he'd do his best to enforce compassion and kindness to them. Having accepted the life of a noble, having made reasons for his life to come as the heir to a Duke, Gaius told himself he was ready to lead.
• However, even though Gaius told himself he was ready, what came next was unexpected. When news of Grima's return, the loss of the Falchion and Fire Emblem, and unfortunately, the loss of Ylisse's Exalt came to Pyrathi, all hell broke loose. For the Spera house, discussions began immediately about the situation of Ylisse with other houses, and preparations begun for the dark times. However, it was Gaius that took the initiative on the situation, deciding to aid the people that looked up to the nobility for guidance. Unfortunately, his heart might have told him that he was ready to take up the responsibility of his people, but his mind told him that he didn't know one thing about times like this. Gaius ended up following his parents' guidance on the situation, doing what must have been done for the situation at hand: guiding the people, developing communications between other nations, etc. Meanwhile, Gaius' own brother was experiencing despair like this for the first time in his life. Fortunately, the boy was more than willing to help, but no matter, he still had so much to learn. Both his parents decided that it was better for the younger heir to stick to his studies, watching from the sidelines instead. The decision struck him as strange and frustrating, but it was Gaius, who also supplied a consistent amount of news on the situation across the country, who calmed him. The older brother was facing these conflicts first hand: seeing break downs, sadness, worry, etc. in all people. He, as the Duke's son, had to bring hope to these people, to tell them and reassure them that everything was going to be okay. For both brothers, they simply hoped that everything was going to get better one day.
• For years to come, the situation potentially worsened for the Spera family. Arguments over who should take the Exalt's position continued on and on, and it was a subject that Gaius refused to take part of, believing that he wasn't ready for such a place He needed time to learn, and, sadly, all the years Gaius had lived for, they failed to teach him everything about nobility. Both Duke and Duchess of the house wanted peace between all houses, but there was clearly nothing to be done about it. The second son of the Spera family was starting his adulthood, and for him, the whole situation was filled with chaos entering it. Gaius agreed to this examination, but there simply was nothing to be done. He tried his best to provide hope to everyone ever since the Exalt was killed, trying to assure the village people that Ylisse would return to its glory one day, but hope was diminishing. There was never a time that Gaius felt more useless than then. His people, his family's people, they were all losing hope, and the more time that passed on, then more trust would was lost...Gaius was failing his duty as a noble. The Spera family could see the entire situation for its people and its own house rotten as well. As such, the Spera family continued to decline into darkness and depression, trying its best to hold onto hope in the darkest of times.
• Yet, there was one day when rumors spread and there was word of a group named the Shepherds. They were a party of many, created to save the world from the destruction of Grima and bring peace to the world once more, or so the tale goes from time to time. When these faint words reached to the ears of the heir of Spera, he wanted to act upon this immediately. No work had been done in so long, and this was going to be the chance that could change the fate of the nation. The response from the Spera family was hesitant at first, however. Barely anyone knew where they were located, and if they did have anything to say on that, it was hazy to say the least; however, it was the Duke and Duchess themselves that believed that they could possibly bring peace to the world. Yet the news that came next was debatable and questionable. Gaius, son of the Duke and Duchess of the Spera house, wanted to leave on a journey to find the Shepherds and aid them in their quest to save the world. Response to this came in waves of denials and rejections, especially from the Duke and Gaius' own brother, but it was his mother, the Duchess herself that allowed the action. She knew that nothing was going to be done arguing over who Ylisse's Exalt should be, and that sitting there in that castle would solve nothing. She was true in the end, despite the dislike to such an idea. In the end, the Spera family was going to lose one family member in hopes that the world would succeed and live on.
• Having been allowed to leave on such a journey, Gaius was shocked and stressed at first. He wasn't sure how to start his venture or how to go about living it, but it was this one time where his own blood came to his aid. His three loved ones assured him that he would succeed. They had hope in him. His father knew that Gaius was a strong individual. His son had exceptional ideals and knew how to fight for them. Such a boy wouldn't give up so easily. His mother knew that Gaius would find his way in the end. He always did through the countless years filled with confusion and confliction, and in the end, he came out on top. His brother knew that Gaius was going to succeed on his journey. The two cared for each other, and the second heir knew that the true heir was a strong and smart older brother. Gaius would find the Shepherds and bring peace back to the world with them, just like that. And with his beloved family members pushing him on, having hope in him that he would succeed, Gaius left the Spera family household, prepared for the journey ahead: new armor and accompanying attire, a brown cloak for warmth and concealment, a moneybag full of bullions that was to be used only for the necessities, a map of every communicative house in Ylisse for hospitality, and a sword for self-defense From then on, Gaius was alone, but he himself was aided by those towns people that still had hope before. They provided him with knowledge of the outside world beyond the castle and villages: survival and common instructions. Gaius took notice of these details and cherished them, only to swear that one day, he'd return home to them, and he would be the Duke that they could follow. With bonds reassured and a happy heart, Gaius set off on his endeavor, traveling from town to town, road to road, forest to forest, all in search for the Shepherds. Some nights, he'd end up sleeping in the wilderness, learning to create a fire, and having to develop sleeping mentalities. Sure, it was all new and intense for him, but Gaius had hope. He made a promise to himself, to his family, to his house, to his people, to all of his friends, that he would save the world from Grima. He had hope that the world would live on to see peace once more, and hope that the Spera family would prosper in these times of despair. Gaius wouldn't give up until the very end, and so he pressed on with hope at his side.
OTHER
When Gaius was a child, whenever he was put to sleep or whenever he was visiting villages with his mother to bring hope to the proletariat, she would occasionally sing for them and him. The song she sang was the same each time, but it had a feeling of protection and sympathy in its tone. It was truly lovely to hear each time, and growing up, Gaius ended up learning it as well. He spent some spare time in his early youth learning how to sing from his mother, and when he reached his adolescent years, Gaius took to singing amongst the townspeople, bringing happiness to them and truly developing the skill into a hobby of his. With the common residents he spent so many days with, he learned, developed, and memorized many songs and themes. He proved to be an excellent vocalist as time passed, and currently, it is the easiest tactic he uses to bring ease to his mind and others.
Even though Gaius was taught and trained in both combat and swordsmanship from the start of his adolescent life to before he left Spera's land, Gaius was never a skilled fighter. He always ended up holding back, because hurting another human being was morally wrong to him. As such, Gaius' skill with the sword and subsequently combat is minimal, limiting himself to winning only small skirmishes with simple thieves and bandits.
Even though Gaius' adolescent life was filled with altercations of the mind, he allowed himself to take part in playful activities with the villagers he visited many times. Developing bonds and friendships with all of them was easy, and there were even times where some females found interest in the kind and charming man. However, Gaius turned down any promise of love, knowing that he wasn't ready for any kind of relationship: he was a noble before a lover and as such, he had to find himself and prove to himself that he was ready for the hardships of a noble before he could commit. If he couldn't deal with what he was expected out of his people and family, then he would end up failing a lover. And even though his mentality grew and strengthened into adulthood, Gaius denied any suitors as well. Inside, at the age he was, he wanted to prove to his parents and the people that trusted his family and him for so long that he could lead and bring happiness to them all. If he was to accept any lover before this, then he might end up forsaking his duty as a noble and heir to the Spera family. Responsibility was first and this case, and he had to assure him that everything was in the right hands, before he could take another in his own arms.
