Sonya's story is not a pretty one. Far from it. It's defined by loss, betrayal, and running or hiding from people worse than her. Some might say she deserved it, and she'd admit that she probably deserved at least half of it. She's hardly a nice person. Or...wasn't, at least. Once upon a time, she'd kill a man just for threatening her. Or if she thought he was going to threaten her. Or if he was going to start a fight. Or if he bothered her...looked at her wrong...she was getting paid...basically, whatever reason she could make up. It's hardly a wonder she ended up where she did. The real surprise was what followed from it.
Her story began, like with most people, with her parents. Their names were Matthis and Melodie, ostensibly common folk living in Ylisstol, and Matthis at least was relatively unimportant in the larger picture. Sonya was the eldest of three children, but only she and the middle child, Kyra, were born from Melodie. After that, her parents split up, Melodie vanished as though she'd never been there, and Matthis re-married a woman named Lucille and had a beautiful baby boy named Nemo. They doted on Nemo and spoiled him rotten, while Sonya was the one they never wanted. Of course, they thought too much of their morality to just get rid of her or Kyra, even though the alternative was to make it very plain and clear that she was unwanted. In turn, she was never a 'good' child, and developed an affinity for violence at a very young age. She had a soft spot for her siblings, though, and that managed to keep her in check until she turned thirteen. Then Nemo ran away from home. Sonya was devastated at the time and couldn't understand it, although she would later come to reason that it was the same reason why a small animal would try to get out of a person's hands if they held it too tight. And soon, after months of Nemo never returning and no word coming of the young child's whereabouts, the parents were forced to pay more attention to Sonya and Kyra. And that's where it came out that both of them, Sonya especially, were completely crazy. But rather than own up to it or try to help, they subtly tried to make them run away too.
And, well, it worked. For Sonya at least. Kyra, with the patience of a saint, stayed behind, for better or for worse and despite a mountain of protests from Sonya. As for Sonya, at only thirteen, she had it very hard living on the streets. By some miracle, she managed to last two years worth of thieving, killing stragglers no one would miss, and living off whatever she could find before she got into so much trouble that she had to run to the biggest kid she could find in the courtyard for help. And at the time, having fallen too far into a criminal lifestyle to go to guards or knights, that was a recruiter for a part-bandit, part-assasin organization working out of Plegia. The recruiter promised her asylum, but in exchange put her through several tests to see if she could make it in their organization. And when she succeeded, he took her to their headquarters in the northeastern region of Plegia, once part of the ancient kingdom of Gra. There, she met the organization's matriarch, Velia.
To say Velia was unpleasant was an incredible understatement. She had all the haughtiness of a noble, the ruthlessness of an assassin, the viciousness of the most barbaric bandits, the greed of a career thief, the arrogance of a certain Valmese tactician, and the fanaticism of a Grimleal cultist. She had ties to the Grimleal too, although with Grima being dead at the time they held less weight than the woman herself. And though Sonya would eventually spend most of her life running from people, to this day Velia was the only person who ever truly scared her. But she took care of her own, and so long as Sonya followed her orders she would have the asylum she sought. And for a time, she was satisfied. Her penchant for violence, the desperation of living on the streets, and the brutal tests she had been put through combined to make the teenage girl into a ruthless killing machine. So she killed, she lied, she threatened, she spied, she traded, she stole, she worked as a mercenary to cover for some of the organization's activities, and eventually she fell in love with one of her fellow assassins.
To note: Sonya fancied both men and women, but has a better track record with women than men. As far as two is greater than zero, at least. The girl she fell for, a taguel named Ama, was much the same as Sonya. Taken in at the same age, similar unpleasant family history, also into other women...needless to say, they hit it off quickly. Her handlers didn't even disapprove of it. Not even Velia did, although perhaps it would be more accurate to say that she didn't care. But their relationship didn't last long before Ama was killed. Sooner or later a guildmaster being extorted by the organization decided that it was easier to just kill the goons sent after him than to pay up, and when Ama was sent to deal with him he burned her alive to send a message. Sonya was soon sent in with several veteran assassins to take care of him, and it soon became apparent that if she didn't fear Velia so much, she would be completely out of control. In a blind rage, she cut the guildmaster into as many pieces as she could manage with whatever weapons she could get her hands on.
For awhile afterward, she tried to keep her feelings under control, but it only lasted so long before they bubbled back to the surface. The mission was pretty standard. A Plegian, former Grimleal with a grudge, put a hit on a Ylissean noble with a homestead near the border. She was sent in with a small group of assassins, but he had a full contingent of guards defending him. Soon enough, she was the only one left but, remembering at an inconvenient moment (or convenient, depending on perspective) the horror of seeing Ama's burned body, she turned and ran. She took a few arrows on the way out but, running on sheer adrenaline, managed to make it to the lake in the north separating the border from Gra, and escaped into the water.
Eventually, she washed up on the eastern shore, where she was found by a dark mage named Aria that had joined up with a group of bandits. It was hard for Sonya to believe that such a nice girl as Aria was was a dark mage (and, as she found out later, formerly Grimleal), but there it was. And despite Sonya's cruelty and aggression, the dark mage took care of her, demanded that the bandit group's healers fix her up, even introduced her to their leader. Sonya joined up with them seeking protection, but instead found companionship. The more time she spent with Aria, the more she started to realize that there was more to life than being a monster ordered around by a bigger monster. She never got to be morally upright. She never regretted anything she did, and though she would eventually come to be capable of feeling sympathy, she was still a killer at heart. But she got better at least. And eventually, she fell for Aria as well. She eventually decided that she wanted to fully commit herself to following whatever path Aria led her on, whether it be with the bandits or away from them to a better life. But before that, she wanted to put as much of her past behind her as she could.
Step one was to meet her real mother. Using what clues Sonya was able to give, Aria helped her to track down Melodie and arrange a meeting with her. But it soon turned out to be the greatest mistake that she ever made. For, as it turned out, Melodie was a Plegian spy, and the moment Sonya let her guard down, she sent a messenger to the Grimleal, fully intending for it to be intercepted by Velia's organization. And so it was. They soon showed up in ridiculous numbers to capture both of them. Sonya and Aria were interrogated and tortured for three days straight before being brought before Velia. Aria got off easy, as Sonya would relate later. She was subject to a re-imagining of drawing and quartering, but she died. As for Sonya, Velia wanted to make sure she was completely broken before killing her, as punishment for failure and desertion. It almost worked, too, but in the end, Sonya resolved to live for both of them. Through some miracle, she escaped, and has been running ever since.
Well, sort of. After the death of the Exalt, she rejoined with the old bandit crew Aria had once been apart of, and within a year she ended up being made their leader. It was then that she found out that they were being paid off by a noble who had become Ylisse's steward. Without realizing it, she had been forced into another unpleasant arrangement where she was forced into doing the dirty work of a higher power. Seeing no good way out of it without bringing down old and new enemies alike on her head, she reluctantly accepted it for the time being. She still yearns for a better and happier life, and has become a much more pleasant person overall, but beneath her friendly, gentle facade is the same killer instinct as was there during the worst part of her life.
OTHER
• With swords or knives, Sonya's fighting style consists of combining blade and open-hand combat, using fast, fluid strikes with the weapon and passing, grappling, or using secondary weapons with the other hand. It's comparable to (and inspired by) the real-world martial art of eskrima.
• Despite this, when called on for assassinations, she tries to go for a more subtle approach nowadays. Her favored approach, when possible, is to seduce the target, give them the time of their life, then kill them in their sleep afterwards, allowing them to die happy.
