BIO
The youngest daughter of the late Plegian king and his illustrious wife. Inessa would later imagine that her birth came with little fanfare, perhaps an 'oh, another girl', and a disappointed glance between her father and mother. With muddy grey hair, a forgettable face, and even more importantly - no natural knack for diplomacy, surely that was the logical reaction for a King and Queen to have as they looked upon their last child together. It shouldn't have taken more than a glance for them to think, 'this one is going to be a disappointment'.
Her earliest memories revolve around her family - Ascher playing pranks on Maeve, reaching up to her mother to be picked up, being tickled relentlessly by Maeve - or was it Beatrice? Such silliness was all well and good when you were 2 or 3, but around the time that Inessa was 5, the real training began.
She never took to it. Maeve and Beatrice both thrived in the role of a princess, Ascher had the strength to reject it all, and Inessa... well, Inessa simply felt inadequate. Just a bit too stupid. Just a bit too clumsy. Just a bit too unlikeable. She remembered every time she was scolded for stepping on the hem of her dress or sneezing without covering her mouth or eating too fast very clearly - after all, every time, she just wanted to go bury herself somewhere to hide her shame.
When some Archery classes opened, Inessa pleaded endlessly to be able to join - anything to take her away from princess training, right? She actually turned out somewhat good at it, though she failed to make any real friends in the class. She had a natural knack for aiming, and Inessa just stuck with it, if just to have something to feel good about. Secretly, the girl always wished to become a pegasus knight, or perhaps a wyvern rider, but she's too fearful of sucking at either to abandon the comfort of the bow and arrow.
Books became another escape for her - though she refused to read nonfiction and magical tomes on principle, she drank up all sorts of fiction stories, becoming quite the romantic - if only her life could be like a storybook, where a dashing prince came to rescue her, where a chance meeting could fix her life, where even someone like her could be useful, important.
By the time she was 13, however, Inessa had convinced herself that she was nothing more than a burden, and was hardly able to hear any positive statements towards herself without wincing and wanting to tell the other not to lie. She grew a knack for agonizing over everything in private, keeping things hidden from others, and simply distancing herself to mope when she got upset, never confronting who upset her or why she was upset in the first place. She was unremarkable, the forgettable fourth sibling. Beatrice was kind and radiant, Maeve was the perfect princess, Ascher was the rambunctious, likeable prince...
And she had nothing.
It was then that she learned of the Grimleal. Of course, she knew about them, knew that they were known as crazy murderers, that they wanted to revive Grima, and she also knew that Grima was generally considered a Very Bad Thing. She knew all of these things, of course...
But when a woman approached her, speaking of finding peace within yourself if you just went to a Grimleal sermon or three - and noticed Inessa's sobbing face long enough to give her a tissue and offer a few murmured words of comfort, she decided that she wanted to at least try it. She never wanted to bother her family with her emotions, and she didn't have any friends, either - at least, nobody that she considered a friend. In truth, a lot of Inessa's problems came from her self-imposed isolation - Beatrice would have surely been willing to listen to her laments, should she have ever spoken up about them. Instead, she turned to the Grimleal.
At first, it was scary and strange. There were so many people that Inessa didn't know, and it was like opening up an entire new world to her. But, there was a sense of welcoming among them - and they all seemed quite nice, even the ones that made her slightly uncomfortable didn't, say, attack her or criticize her. She listened, and listened, and listened...
By the 20th session or so, she was excited. Excited to steal away from her family in secret, and meet with her new friends. There was a certain exhilaration to leading a double life - by day, a poised princess, by night a devout grimleal. Nobody in her family knew - though they certainly noticed the lift in her spirits, she was cagey enough on just why for them to settle for 'perhaps she's in love'. However, Inessa was by no means the perfect liar. She wasn't quite getting away scot free - rumors began to form, of one of the Royal children being one of the Grimleal.
This, of course, made her nervous. She wanted to come clean, she did, but at the same time, she looked at Maeve's hatred of Grimleal, her distaste for anything related to them, and hesitated. She imagined her parent's disapproving faces. She imagined Ascher, shaking his head and turning his back on her. She imagined Beatrice rejecting her entirely.
And so, she stayed quiet. She lied. She covered it all up as best as she could, only digging her hole deeper in the long run. And somehow, she managed three years.
Three years, until one horrible day, her father was assassinated. Ascher was in line for the throne, but Maeve kicked him out - because she suspected he was the Grimleal of the family, not Inessa. Guilt was her first reaction to the news - a horrible, crushing guilt that almost made Inessa burst into tears right in front of Maeve. It hadn't been Ascher's fault, she had just been sloppy. The second emotion was terror - because she had been right. Her sister really would hate her if she knew the truth - and now she didn't have the option of telling her, ever. And her third emotion was a quiet, boiling anger. The grimleal weren't that bad, and to blindly punish Ascher, (who also wasn't that bad) was terrible. Some days, Inessa considered assassinating her sister herself - after all, if her sister was dead, that would surely end the civil war as well, wouldn't it? Only fear, and the fact that she actually did still feel for and desire the approval of her sister kept her from anything drastic.
Instead, she stayed as she was. She made excuses to pull herself out of the castle as much as possible, staying with the Grimleal instead. She spoke on snippets of what she would hear from her sister and around the castle, and she quietly hoped that the world would be cleansed soon - because then, she wouldn't need to worry about the possibility of rejection, right?
OTHER
- she gay, she real gay
- she spends a lot of time daydreaming about things. kind of has a morbid, self-deprecating sense of humor at times.
- she tends to wear different 'faces' around different people - a result of her desire to be accepted rather than her dishonesty. around her siblings she's more poised, and around the grimleal she's more warm and friendly.
- she carries a book around with her at all times. it is often used as an excuse to avoid a conversation, or end one.
- definitely the type to lie and lie and lie with only a bit of remorse involved to avoid a perceived bigger conflict.
- may or may not have participated in some shady grimleal rituals, may or may not have enjoyed it. look when you're in rome you do as romans do
- has a really romantic view on a lot of different things. wants to have a big wedding and a nice warm family and be held and smooched and possibly have makeouts in the rain. but also she wants the world to end in a hail of beautiful dragon breath and noble sacrifice
