BIO
Pataleon was born into nobility. Not quite high nobility who genetically rubs shoulders with the royal house, but ancient and influential enough that their name should not be spoken in vain. They are a highly martial family who in peacetime subsist themselves by having their hands in the salt trade with a handful of mines residing on their land out in the desert. Their martial tradition mostly comes in the form of wielding spears atop of a wyverns. Pataleon, of course is an exception to this as he received his training at an academy. Overall, the family did not have a stance on the Grimleal ordeal.
He was born the third of three sons, and as a such not neglected, but still not seen as important as his two other brothers who had a bigger role in the ruling of the family heritage. They were personally trained by his father in the way of arms, which meant Pataleon didn't see them that often but it also allowed him to live his childhood in fun doing pranks with a small packs of other bored nobles, reading, and occasionally hunting for sport – an event usually led by her mother who was that kind of woman who wasn't a warrior but still not a delicate flower as her skin was tanned from the sun, and her muscles larger than most ladies of the noble courts. His parents generally were a special pair, and the only reason they got married so easily was because her parents were getting tired of her behaviour, had enough daughters, and didn't want her husband to come on a visit with a best man or other foolhardy manoeuvres.
Then at the age of twelve his father realised that he still needed his third son occupied with something so that he didn't have to live off an allowance. His solution was to put down a “no fun allowed” sign and send him to military academy where he studied the art of arms, magic and leading people into war. With his father being a general of renown, he was of course taken to the court with his brother to be introduced there. Most of the attention were on his brothers, but at times he would be taken to court alone by his mother who like the bear mother she was wanted to make sure that all her sons would kick ass in the future. She sort of compensated for the lack of attention his father gave to his brothers at the cost of him. If anything good came out of this, it was that Pataleon realised that he was valued – never getting any cronic self-doubt as a result – and that he got to meet people in the court that his brothers did not. (Writers Note: Which I am going to leave vague in case someone want to use that acquaintance slash friendship as a plot.)
When he joined the military at he age of fifteen, he was a little unfortunate as most of the people who graduated with him were a lot more important, so the only officer position there were available to him was that of a quartermaster. It was in a large army though, so it was not all wasted. Around the age of when he was nineteen, there finally got room in the ranks and he was giving a proper officer rank. He showed promises and had gotten a reputation for getting shit done (sometimes the hard way), knowing when to retreat his troops from a battle, and overall not wasting resources, so a year later he was promoted to the higher officer ranks. Now he was equal to his brothers in rank and he was happy about that. However, he was also humble enough not to mash it in their faces that he earned his position while they had not. Sometimes life gives you opportunities and sometimes they don't.
He had been in several years of service when the former Marshal died, and for fun and profit he put his name up for the position. That he actually got picked was a surprise for him. It was not like he had decades of service to back up his resume. In private the queen has told him she chose him for his reputation for getting things done, and that she thought she could trust him. So far he have been serving her for about 4/5 of the time she have been on the throne.
OTHER
When it comes to religion stand no where as an ally towards the Grimleal as legends has a consistent image of their deity being evil, and the exposure he have had to the cult has turned him off to be a devoted disciple (although he does not openly condemn them). However, he is not that wild about Naga and her church either. Both are gods, and seem very connected to one another, so he is not sure that Naga is going to be nice when her evil counterpart is gone. Even killing people with kindness is still cruel after all. He is not public about either positions for obvious reasons.
He have several scars on his body from cuts and blows. Admittedly, they do not come from always being on the frontlines, but from sparring. Pantaleon has a habit of sparring with people who are way better than himself in hopes of improving himself, and if any wounds appears he would just use his money to pay a healer to fix it up. On a related note: He is ambidextrous, but uses his right-hand to wield his sword since everyone else does so.
